Pre-AP Cell Analogy Project

Objectives:

• Relate cell organelles functions to real world systems

• Create a 3D Model of a real world system that is similar to a cell

• Produce a product that is neat, clear and creative

Procedure:

• Each student will work independently

• Choose a real world working system and decide how each organelle of the eukaryotic cell

can be compared to the components and functions of the real world system. It is best to choose a real world system that
relates to your interest/hobbies but you can choose anything. Some ideas are:

School, Hospital, Mall, Restaurant, Lab, Salon, Construction Site, Prison, etc.

• Create a 3D model of the real world system and write a one page paper justifying what you compared your cell too.
Your model can be made of anything, use stuff that you already have at home such as recycled items. It must be colored
and show very high effort. Not artistic? Trace diagrams, make pictures on the computer…get creative!

• Your model has to be labeled with both the cell parts and the real world system.

• On a separate sheet, attached to the front or back of your model include the organelle, the analogous structure, and a
one page paper that explains the analogy (30pts).

• Organelles to be included (6.4 pts each.):

1. Cytoplasm/Cytoskeleton

2. Endoplasmic reticulum (rough and smooth can be same structure)

3. Golgi Apparatus

4. Lysosome

5. Mitochondria

6. Nucleus

7. Cell Membrane

8. Ribosome

9. Vacuole

10. Cell Wall (plant cells only)

11. Chloroplasts (plant cells only)

Bonus: cilia, flagella
