Assignment No. 2
DETERMINATION OF PROBABLE BLOOD TYPES

1. Differentiate the genotype from phenotype in the context of blood

groupings.

A phenotype consists of only those traits or antigens that can be directly

typed, whereas a genotype is the sum of all genes a person has inherited within
a blood group system.

Table 4-5 shows ABO phenotypes and possible genotypes if only O, A,

and B genes are considered.

Table 4-5. Correlation of ABO phenotypes and genotypes.

A AA or AO
B BB or BO
AB AB
O OO

2. Explain or demonstrate the probability of Type A and Type B couples

having a Type A, Type B, Type AB and Type O child.

Each biological parent donates one of their two ABO alleles to their child.
A mother who is blood type O can only pass an O allele to her son or daughter. A
father who is blood type AB could pass either an A or a B allele to his son or
daughter. This couple could have children of either blood type A (O from mother
and A from father) or blood type B (O from mother and B from father).

Since there are 4 different maternal blood types and 4 different paternal
blood types possible, there are 16 different combinations to consider when
predicting the blood type of children.

3. If the father is Blood Type O and the mother is Blood Type O, the only
possible blood type of their child is Type O. Agree or Disagree. Explain
your answer.
Yes, I agree because both the parents who are blood type O can only
pass such blood type to their children. It could not be possible that a different
blood type be passed on to their offspring.
