In America, Hallowe’en is a time of monsters, ghosts and scary nights. It is the last night in
October, when (according to tradition) all the ghosts and witches come out.

The fun of dressing up in spooky costumes, and the need for a little mystery have brought
the idea of celebrating Hallowe’en back to Britain from America. Until very recently the only
festival in Britain at the end of autumn and the beginning of winter was Guy Fawkes’ Night
(5 November). In fact these festivals are one and the same thing: a celebration to mark
the end of the traditional Celtic year.

Because, in the year 1605 Guy Fawkes was caught trying to blow up the Houses of
Parliament a few days after All Hallows Eve (Hallows is an old name for All Saints’ Day), the
date of the celebration shifted: ‘Remember the Fifth of November! Gunpowder, Treason
and Plot’.
