Testing to: EN ISO 5470-1Rubber- or plastics-coated fabrics - Determination of abrasion

resistance - Part 1: Taber abrader (ISO 5470-1:1999).
Wheel H18 and 1kg weight per wheel

Test Method
The sample was mounted in the Taber machine and run with the two wheels. H18 wheel and 1kg
load on each wheel at 72hz. The sample was weighted before testing and after testing. The
wheels where cleaned and re-faced with the wear disc before each test. The sample was run for
1000 cycle.

Weight (Mass) Loss

This technique measures how much material has been removed by abrasion and is usually
reported in milligrams.
L=A-B
where L = weight loss
A = weight (mass) of specimen before abrasion
B = weight (mass) of specimen after abrasion
When performing the weight loss method, loose particulate may adhere to specimens during
testing. It is critical that you clean off the test specimens as best as possible prior to weighing .
Taber Wear Index
Indicates rate of wear and is calculated by measuring the loss in weight (in milligrams) per
thousand cycles of abrasion.
The lower the wear index, the better the abrasion resistance.

Report 3885

I = [(A - B) * 1000] / C
where I = wear index
A = weight (mass) of specimen before abrasion
B = weight (mass) of specimen after abrasion
C = number of test cycles

Requirements
There are no specification pass/ fail requirements. This test is a comparison between samples to
determine which is abrading fast or slower per number of cycles. This then works out the mass
loss or the wear index which allows the wear to be compared.
