Press Tool - Tonnage
• Working tonnage refers to the cutting pressure
(force) during shearing or bending pressure of
hydraulic press brake during bending.
• The tonnage rating for a press refers to the peak
load that the press can safely deliver without
causing damage to the press frame, ram, bushings,
etc.
• The maximum tonnage that a press can withstand
without compromising any of its components is
called press tonnage capacity.

PRESS TOOL DESIGN 17

Benefits of using Press Tools
• High strength of created
components
• Various types of components
• Good dimensional accuracy
• Good surface finish
• Relatively low cost
• For large quantities, economical
mass production operations are
available

PRESS TOOL DESIGN 18

Limitations of using Press Tools
• Expensive for small quantity production
• Maintenance is expensive
• Power requirement is high
• If incorrectly used and designed, will result in large quantities of defects

PRESS TOOL DESIGN 19

Applications of Pressed Parts/Components
Sheet and plate metal parts for consumer and industrial products such as
• Automobiles and trucks
• Airplanes
• Railway cars and locomotives
• Farm and construction equipment
• Small and large appliances
• Office furniture
• Computers and office equipment
• Kitchen Utensils
