Safety Guidelines for

Engineering Workshops
Attention: Staff (Academic & Non-academic) and students
hereby advised to follow
the safety guidelines:

General Safety guidelines to be followed at all times:

 No sandals or opened toed shoes are permitted in the work area
 Refrain from wearing loose apparel or T-Shirts
 Loosely fitted clothing must be tucked in or tied up and neck
ties are not permitted.
 Long hair must be combed well and tied back at all times
 Roll up the sleeves or button them up at the wrist
 Bracelets and other loose jewelry must be removed prior to
using the machinery
 All personnel attending to machine operations must wear eye
protection at all times
 No horseplay around the machines is permitted. Machine tools
can be dangerous
 Any oil spilled on the floor must be immediately cleaned up or
brought to the attention of the technical staff
 Approval of the Workshop Engineer or
supervisory/demonstration staff is a must before attending to
any operation in the workshop
 Unauthorized use of the any piece of equipment is a punishable
offence

General Safety guidelines to be followed at all times:
Machine shop - Lathe Exercise
 Identify and verify the operation of the emergency stop button/ lever
o Don’t hesitate to press emergency stop button at the emergency
 Goggles or safety glasses should be worn
 Do not wear gloves
 Don’t operate machines when you are tired or under the influence of drugs
 Check that all locking devices on the tailstock and tool rest assembly are tight before
operating the lathe
 Make sure the workpiece is securely fastened
 Remove chuck keys and adjusting wrenches before turning on the lathe
 Rotate your workpiece by hand to make sure it clears the tool-rest and bed before turning
the lathe “on”
 Always check the speed of the lathe before turning it on
o Use slower speeds for larger diameters or rough pieces,
o Higher speeds for smaller diameters and pieces
o Always start a piece at a slower speed until the workpiece is balanced
o If the lathe is shaking or vibrating, lower the speed
o If the workpiece vibrates, immediately stop the machine to check the reason
 Don’t overreach, keep proper footing and balance at all times
 Keep tools sharp and clean for better and safer performance
o Don’t force a dull tool
o Don’t use a tool for a purpose it was not designed or intended.
 Stay alert
o Watch what you are doing
o Pay close attention to unusual sounds or vibrations - stop the lathe to investigate
the cause
 Never try to stop rotating parts by hand
 Never leave the running lathe
o Don’t leave lathe before it become to rest

PCB Manufacture

 Goggles or safety glasses should be worn when drilling and soldering.

 Gloves should be worn when doing chemical etching
 Respiratory protection is required to be worn during soldering
 Switch off the soldering iron and the electric iron when not in use
 Don’t leave the soldering iron and the electric iron on a bench or desk when it is plugged.
 Do not wear gloves when you operate the drilling machine.
 Don’t touch the rotating part of the drilling machine.

Machine shop - Milling Exercise

 Identify and verify the operation of the emergency stop button/ lever
o Don’t hesitate to press emergency stop button at the emergency
 Wear/use approved protective equipment at all times.
 Remove rings, watches and loose clothing; suitably confine long hair.
 Inspect work area for unsafe conditions, and remedy before beginning work.
 Goggles or safety glasses should be worn
 Do not wear gloves
 Don’t operate machines when you are tired or under the influence of drugs
 Be sure that everything is secure
o Check the job in the vise or chuck for tightness
o Check the cutter, the bolts holding a vise or any attachment
 Check the safe clearance of job, cutter, arbor, overarm brackets, vise or index head before
turning on the power
 Do not lean on the machine; stand upright
 Keep your head out of the direct line of the cutter
 Stay on the going-away side of the cutter
 Remove chips with brush
 Stop the machine before
o Measuring the job
o Changing the feed
o Reversing the feed
 Don’t overreach to the cutter
 Stay alert
o Watch what you are doing
 Never try to stop rotating parts by hand
 Never leave the running milling machine
 Keep work areas in a clean and safe condition.

Carpentry shop

 Goggles or safety glasses should be worn

 Do not wear gloves
 Identify and verify the operation of the emergency stop button/ lever
 Don’t hesitate to press emergency stop button at the emergency
 Don’t operate machines when you are tired or under the influence of drugs
 Ear protection is highly recommended when working with loud power tools and
machinery
 Respiratory protection/face shield is recommended to be worn, when working on the
wood working lathe.

Foundry

 Proper dressing is required for casting

 Wear leather shoes or boots, heavy cotton pants or jeans (no holes or frayed
edges) and cotton or leather tops
 Synthetic fibers and open-toed shoes are prohibited
 Ear protection is optional, but highly recommended
 Respiratory protection is required to be worn
 Working alone in the foundry is prohibited
 No smoking
 No food or drink
 Know the tool you are working with before you attempt to use it
 In case of injury, immediately stop work and notify shop attendant

Welding Area

 Wear/use approved protective equipment at all times.

 Remove rings, watches and loose clothing; suitably confine long hair.
 Inspect work area for unsafe conditions, and remedy before beginning work.
 Keep work areas in a clean and safe condition.
 Work in a safe location away from others
 Wear protective clothing, gauntlets and eye protection
 Shut off the blowpipe when not in use
 Don’t leave a lighted blowpipe on a bench or the floor as the force of the flame may
cause it move
 Clamp the workpiece, do not hold it by hand
 Keep hoses away from the working area to prevent contact with flames, heat, sparks or
hot spatter
 Eye protection is required to be worn when operating any hand or power tool or when
working near others using such tools
 Ear protection is optional, but highly recommended
 Proper dressing is required for casting and welding
 Wear leather shoes or boots, heavy cotton pants or jeans (no holes or frayed
edges) and cotton or leather tops
 Synthetic fibers and open-toed shoes are prohibited
 Protective attire (leather jackets, spats, and gloves) will be provided for use
when welding
 Working alone in the welding area is prohibited
 No smoking
 No food or drink
 Know the tool you are working with before you attempt to use it
 In case of injury, immediately stop work and notify shop attendant
 Do not remove safety shields/devices.
