General Personal Safety Practices


Wear Safety Glasses

Don't talk to other while operating any machinery

No loose, baggy, or hanging clothing in shop

Most accidents are caused by carelessness

Refrain from poor shop behavior


No scuffling, tripping, pushing, playing with tools, running, hurrying projects, or loud talking/ yelling

No open toed shoes


No headphones while operating machinery

pants recommended rather than shorts

Always know where the emergency stop button is on the machine

know where the first aid kits are


Know where exits and fire extinguishers are located

Whenever you work with a machine table, hand tool, and a vise:

Ensure the part is secured in vise

Vises on a machine table MUST be clamped down

Turn on Proper ventilation

Pay attention to safety regulations, never rely on other student for advice

Ask questions from T.A.'s and teachers


Use correct tool/machine for the job
Do NOT operate machinery in shop alone

Sharp tools cut better, require less effort, and are safer. Inform the instructor about a dull tool!

No horseplay allowed
Always have another student or mentor in the shop while operating machinery

Never use a machine without permission from instructor


Guards are placed on tools and machines for your safety- Do not remove or alter them!

Keep floors clear from backpacks and debris

Never sit on power machinery!

Always have an instructor double-check your set-up

Make sure switch is in "off" position before plugging it in

Report any damaged tools to instructor at once!

Caution other student if you see them doing something dangerous, inform the instructor as well
Let instructor know immediately if you are injured

You must pass the Safety test and receive instruction on each specific machine before operating it
