General Personal Safety Practices


Always wear safety glasses.

Don't put your hand in the machine when it is running.


Concentrate on the machine you are working on, do not talk to anyone and focus on the machine.

Housekeeping, make sure everything is clean


Fire prevention

Most accidents are caused by carelessness

Caused by human error

Refrain from getting involved in poor shop behavior: scuffling, tripping, pushing, playing with tools, etc

5 Safety Rules for proper clothing

Safety glasses are required at all times, no exceptions


No open-toed shoes inside the shop

No loose, baggy, or hanging clothing

Know where the emergency stop buttons are, know where first aid kit is, and know where exits and fire extinguishers are
Secure your parts when working with a machine

Proper ventilation systems keep you healthy

Pay attention to safety demonstrations, ask questions, seek help, do not rely on other students, but teachers.

Use correct tool for the job

Do not operate machinery in the shop alone, no horseplay, always have another person with you
Never use a machine without instructor permission

Guards are placed on tools and machines for your safety do not alter or remove them

Keep floors clears from debris

Never sit on power machinery


Have the instructor double check your set up

Make sure the switch is in the "OFF" position before plugging in any power tool

Report damaged tools to the instructor at once! This will keep other students from possible serious injury
Caution another student if you see them doing something dangerous, and let the instructor know about it.
Sharp tools cut better! require less effort and are much safer, let instructor know if tool is dull

You must pass the safety test and receive instruction on each and every machine and tool
