A MAGAZINE

You have been asked to write the articles and pages for an important magazine this
week.

The magazine director tells you that you can work in pairs. This way you can
investigate and find more information and then help each other to write the articles.

Read the instructions carefully. And enjoy writing your magazine!

Articles and pages in the magazine:

● Horoscopes
● Sports pages
● Film reviews
● Cinema news
● Fashion
● Photo stories
● Comic strips
● Word searches
● Technology pages
● Music
● Interviews with famous people
● Opinion article
● Recipes
● Jokes
● Problem pages
● Beauty tips
(The director tells you to choose at least 4 of the articles in bold, and you can do
one type of writing twice if you’re interested)

STEPS:

1. Decide which article or page to write first. Read the Instructions on how to
write the articles before starting to write. It is very important that you
clearly know what you have to do. Pay attention to the length and the
structure of the text (paragraphs) and if any specific vocabulary is needed:
a. In the texts where you have 3 paragraphs, they are
INTRODUCTION, BODY (with details of the new things you will
explain) and CLOSING.
2. The director of the magazine asks each pair to write 9 articles or pages in
total, 4 of which have to be from the ones in bold.
3. All the class together: when the articles are finished, the whole class will
decide which ones will be selected to go to the magazine. So you have to
read them and choose (Drive compartit)
4. All the class together: give the magazine a name. It’s a good idea that you
think of the name at the end, after you have read all the articles and
information in the magazine, this way you will give it a more accurate name.

EXTRA DUTIES

Some of you will have extra duties such as being the editor and the digital editor of
the magazine. There will be two students for each position and they will have some
privileges.
The editor will decide which is the best format for the magazine: paper, blog,
website, etc. And he will also review story ideas and decide what material will
appeal most to readers. They will review writings and offer comments to improve
the product and suggest titles and headlines.
Digital editor: Once a week they will post an interesting news or fact on Instagram.
It can be from the field of telecommunications or something of interest that
happened that week in class or in Osona.
Instructions on how to write the articles

Horoscopes

Each pair will write about only one star sign. So, with all the class, decide which pair
will write about which star sign.

Vocabulary to use: adjectives of personality.

Length: Each sign of the zodiac prediction should be between 50 and 60 words. If
needed one pair can write more than one prediction.

Sports pages

Write an informative article about something related to any sport. You can give
information about what happened during the match or talk about a specific sports
person (his life or his sports career).

Divide the text in three paragraphs at least.

Length: 200-250 words.

Film review

Write about a film that you watched recently. It can also be a series if you don’t watch
films. Write a review: first make a summary of the film (without revealing the end)
and give your opinion (favourite parts, things you didn’t like, things that could be
improved…).

Divide the text in three paragraphs at least.

Length: 200-250 words.

Cinema news

Write about the latest news in the cinema industry. For example: new actors on the
scene, films that will be released soon and coming film festivals.

Divide the text in three paragraphs at least.

Length: 200-250 words.

Photo stories
Do a photographic report about something of your interest. The report should be
about one topic, then take photos of interesting things and, below the picture, write
an interesting explanation of what that is.

Length: There should be between 5 and 8 photos.

Comic strips
Create a comic strip. Think of a short story that has a beginning, a series of
adventures and an end. Also think about who will be the main character or
characters in the story.
You can do it on paper or use this website.
Length: The comic should have between 13 and 20 strips.
Word searches
Create a word search with 10 words related to your field of studies. You have to give
a lead about what is the topic people will be looking for.
Use this website to create your puzzle.
Fallen phrases
A fallen phrase is a short phrase of some interest that you have to discover. The
reader is given some random letters and has to put them in the correct space. Ex:

Use this website to create your fallen phrase.

Technology pages
Write about a technology device you are interested in, explain how it works, what it
does, why it is useful (where it can be applied)...
Divide the text in three paragraphs at least.

Length: 200-250 words.

Opinion articles
Write about a topic of your interest that can be a bit controversial (some people
are in favour and some people are against it) and give your opinion.
Structure: first paragraph (explain what is the situation, describe the opinions that
there are as regards this topic), second paragraph (give your opinion), third
paragraph (write a conclusion).
Ideas for this article:
● Should we ban homework: does homework promote learning?
● Banning mobile devices (cell phones, smartphones) at schools: yes or no?
● Is abortion murder?
● Are violent video games appropriate entertainment for teenagers?
● Does modern social media make people less socially active?
● Is higher education a necessary prerequisite for an individual’s financial
success in the future?
● Will electronic databases fully substitute brick and mortar libraries?
● Is cloning ethically acceptable?
● Is the legalization of marijuana a good idea?
● Should euthanasia be legalized?
● Is there any reason to raise minimum wages?
● Drug addicts: Do they need help or punishment?

Length: 200-250 words.

Problem pages
In this section there’s usually a person who writes about a problem that they have in
their life and then someone in the magazine gives them advice on how to solve the
problem. As you are working in pairs, one will write the problem and the other will
give the advice.
Example: One of you is worried because of the marks he has in class and the other
student gives him advice on how he could improve his performance in class.
Length: each person should write 100 words.
