Expressing Personal Opinions in Written Forms

Reaction Paper
The term "reaction paper" is most commonly used at the elementary level. This paper allows or asks a
person to write a reaction on something that he or she had seen, heard, or experienced.
For example, after watching a movie, you would be saying a lot of things about it. You will express your
thoughts and personal opinions whether they be negative or positive. You will comment on the actors and
actresses and the roles that they play. Sometimes, you would even mention the memorable lines that you have
heard. If you are a sharp person, you would even give comments on the lights and sounds and their effects.
Some would even notice not only the actors or actresses but also the skills of the director.
In doing a reaction paper, here are some of the questions that you need to ask:
 What is the main topic of the reading material or item that I will be reacting to?
 What are its strengths and weaknesses?
 Do I agree with the points, arguments, and claims of the writer? What are my reactions toward the
content?
Review Paper
A review paper has content that is slightly on the next level of critical thinking. A review paper or a
review article is usually a term used for the write-up of journalists or columnists expressing their personal
opinions. But aside from personal opinions, a review paper balances opinions with facts, thus giving the paper a
more mature outlook.
So if you are going to write a review paper for the same movie above, you will not just write your
reactions to it. As a more mature writer, you will try to give a balanced outlook of the movie. Aside from your
reactions, you will also include facts such as ticket sales, cinemas where it is shown, and perhaps the tour
schedule of the cast. You may also integrate the comments that you've heard from other people whether they are
negative or positive. If you liked the movie, you would probably recommend it and give your reasons for your
recommendation. If you didn't like it, you will warn others. But your reasons for doing so would not just be
based on your personal opinions; rather, you will support your personal opinions with facts.
In doing a review paper, here are some of the questions that you need to ask:
 What is the main topic of the reading material or item that I will be reviewing?
 What are its strengths and weaknesses?
 What are my opinions about these strengths and weaknesses?
Critique Paper
The critique paper is the most academic in nature among the three. The critique paper is commonly used
in senior high school, in college, and even in graduate school. It may be the most challenging to write among
the three types of paper. It is an intellectual discourse integrating just a few personal opinions, many facts
supported by sources, and other aspects such as the integration of other theories or similar phenomena and the
relationship of the inue or matter to other things in the world. A critique paper displays the writer's ability to
evaluate and pass sound and critical judgment on the issue or matter at hand.
So going back to the movie, an elementary student would probably be asked to merely react to it. As you
reach higher grade levels, you will be asked to take your reactions to the next level and review the movie by
balancing your personal opinions with other facts. But if you are required to write a critique paper, you will not
only write your reactions and other facts about the movie. You may also integrate the following:
 Another work of art such as a song or a painting.
 Another movie by the same director
 Another movie with the same genre but directed by a different director and with a different cast.
 Another movie by the same actor/actress comparing their roles.
 Another actor/actress portraying the same role in another movie.
 Another international movie with a similar genre, etc.
Tips for Writing a Reaction, a Review, and a Critique Paper
The major requirement in this module is for you to come up with a critique paper. The following are the
instructions on what your paper should look like, as well as some tips on how to write it.
Format
1. Paper size: 8.5"
2. Spacing: Double-spaced
3 Font: Times New Roman
4. Font size: 12
5 Margins: 1 inch on all sides
6. Footer: Page number (Page of)
7. Header: School logo (left side), your name (right side)
Cover Page
The cover page should contain the title of your paper, your name, the name of your teacher, the date you
have submitted the paper, your section/year, and the name of your school. (Your cher may also opt to require
you to use the APA recommended format. Please refer to OWL Purdue online for the APA cover page format.)
The Content
In writing the content, follow the specifications indicated in the format section. The tent of your paper
should also include the introduction, the body, and the conclusion.
Here are some tips on how to get you started in writing your paper.
1. Read or watch the material or subject of your paper.
2. Choose three major points that you would like to emphasize and focus on in your paper. For example, in the
movie, you would like to focus on the roles of the cast, the issues presented in the movie, and the impact of the
movie on viewers.
3. Define what your thesis statement is. Write it down. You may write several thesis statements, revise, and
choose one later on.
4 Apply the writing process suggested in Module 11 to generate your ideas or thoughts for this paper.
5. Have a conclusive statement.
What to Avoid Doing
You should not merely summarize what you have experienced. You should also not simply
write what you think. Make sure that you summarize and that you give a balanced outlook on
the facts and your personal opinions. Aside from these, you should also relate the matter with other things in
this world. Again, go beyond the surface level.
Writing a Concept Paper
Definition and Purpose
In the workplace, a concept paper is asked beforea full proposal. A concept paper contains a "concept."
It contains a proposed idea. It may not be detailed, but it provides a framework of an idea that can be carried
out into a proposal (and eventually, from the proposal into a full paper).
When presented, the concept paper should give a clear picture of what the research, project, or
feasibility study is all about. It clarifies from the very beginning what the purpose is and what process is
necessary to carry out that purpose. It should demonstrate the worth of the idea and its significance to the
beneficiaries.
Parts of a Concept Paper
These are the parts of a concept paper.
1. Name or title of the concept - Give your concept a catchy or interesting name.
2. Introduction-Introduce the concept briefly. Tell the reader what the project, research.
or feasibility study is all about.
3 Statement of purpose - In one sentence, writewhat your purpose is.
4 Objectives - In bulleted or numbered statements, write what your objectives are. Remember to observe the
principle of parallelism here.
5 Questions-Write at least three questions (not too narrow and not too broad) that your idea, if carried out, will
answer. who
6. Stakeholders/Beneficiaries - List who will be involved in the whole process and will benefit from it later on.
7. Short description - Write a short description of your concept. This can be written in several paragraphs, but
try to limit yours into three or five paragraphs.
8. Methodology-What process are you going to follow to carry out your concept or idea into complete reality?
9 Timetable - You can create an illustration, a graph, or a table that will show the dates or time that you expect a
certain task to be done. 10. Conclusion Write a short paragraph and conclude your concept paper. Your
conclusion should emphasize the purpose and the importance or significance of your big idea in the paper.
Format
The format of your concept paper is the same as your critique paper.
1. Paper size: 8.5" 11" (letter size)
2. Spacing: Double-spaced
3. Font: Times New Roman
4. Font size: 12 points
5 Margins: 1 inch on all sides
6. Footer: Page number (Page of
7. Header: School logo (left side), your name (right side)
Cover Page
The cover page should contain the title of your paper, your name, the name of your teacher, the date you
have submitted the paper, your section/year, and the name of your school. (Your teacher may also opt to require
you to use the APA recommended format. Please refer to OWL Purdue online for the APA cover page format.)
Writing Process
Simply follow the writing process discussed in Module 11 to generate ideas for your concept paper. Go
to the library, search the internet, or do a simple field research to add substance to the content of your concept
paper.
A4. Application
Instruction: Read the synopsis of the movie “Seven Sundays” below and write a reaction paper about it. Write
your reaction on the lines provided.(grammar: 10 content: 5)
“SEVEN SUNDAYS SYNOPSIS”
“The story starts when the father of 4 announces to his kids that he is going to die soon. This father is a widow
who feels lonely and misses the company of his grown-up kids. Upon learning of their father's condition, the
siblings decide to spend time with one another on Sundays. Even though, they have their personal issues and
differences, they decide to do this for their father. Everything goes well when they spend Sundays with their
father. They reminisce childhood and teenage memories. As they spend more time, they get to know each other
again. Each has his/her own problems which are unknown to the other sibling. The eldest son, Allan, and the
second son, Brian have a talk about Brian's troubles. One day, the father receives a call from his doctor stating
that he made a wrong diagnosis. The father does not reveal this to his kids until the truth is found out by the
eldest son. They have a talk and the father explains why he decided not to tell the truth. The eldest son, Allan,
expresses his feelings about the whole situation and convinces the father to reveal the truth in their next get-
together. At the start of the get-together, the youngest son, Dex, finds out about his sister's marital problems.
The whole family also finds out about Dex's troubles and has a confrontation with Brian. Cha's problems are
brought out in the open, too. In the process of the confrontation, their father's real condition is revealed and this
surprises Brian and Cha. This creates an exchange of painful words against the siblings and unearthing of past
pains. After a couple of days, Allan apologizes to Brian and they patch things up. They both take the chance to
apologize to Dex, as well. All three go to Cha's house to visit her. and check her situation. All four meet their
father at their mother's grave and they talk to their dad about how they appreciate his sacrifices for the family.
They work out their issues and resolve hurt emotions. The story ends with the revival of Allan's store, fun
activities, and a dance showdown.”
IV. Thematic Integration:
In writing judgment, it is important to be kind and fair. Writing a reaction needs to be sensitive enough
to avoid misinterpretation and misunderstanding.
