2.1 Methodology
Steps to make a good calibration:

1. Check the limits of fruit detection (by passing a fruit with the sizer in operation).
2. Set the green-red limit (if percentage sizing).
3. Construct the colours algorithm (adapt the number of colours in Orphea).
4. Adjust the parameters to detect the defects.
5. Select the number of external qualities (adapt the algorithm of synthesis quality in Orphea).
6. Pass a series of fruits of each colour and each quality to define the sizing limits of each
colour and each defect.

7. Refer to the following section for more details

poorly analyzed by the machine.
It is best to store the images in a specific folder before giving it to a specialist
who will tell you how to adjust your quality.
You can also name the file « #99 » for example so that the next 99 images will
be saved in the selected directory.

2.2.3.2. Colour sorting definition

A colour tree diagram is constructed with the following criteria:
« The percentage of colour » usually represents the red part of the
fruit. You must have set previously the limit between the coloured
portion and the background of the fruit (see previous chapter).
Otherwise this result will be inconsistent with reality. This
criterion is used to sort the bicolour apples from the reddest to the
less red, or to find the pink faces of a fruit.

The « average colour » is calculated with the average colour of

each pixel. This criterion is generally used to sort apples of one
colour (Golden, Granny…).

« The shade of colour » is the colour of the area that has been
defined as coloured part; it is calculated with the red pixels
average (pixels in the contour shown in red). This criterion is
generally used to sort bicolour apples, particularly the Pink Lady
(this determines the intensity of red).

The background is the whole fruit excepting the coloured part. Its
colour is obtained by making the addition of the non-red pixels
divided by the number of non-red pixels.
This criterion is generally used to sort bicolour apples,
particularly the Braeburn or the single coloured apples with pink
face.

The luminance RGB indicates whether a fruit is dark or light. Its

representation is an image in greyscale. This criterion is generally
used to sort fruits too dark to define a colour (e.g. apples, cherries,
black plums).

The luminance IR indicates whether a fruit is dark or light in IR.

This criterion is generally used to remove the rotten apples, which
is strongly recommended not to pass on the sizer.

To determine the number of the colour to which the fruit will be assigned, the results of each fruit
are compared to each criterion in the following order:

2.3.1 Peduncle

If this box is checked all the dark areas in IR are dilated

(including peduncle areas).
This allows in certain varieties to group the spots belonging to
the same peduncle if this is spread out (or subject to peduncle
cracking).

It determines the maximum size of a normal peduncle. If it is

higher, the abnormal peduncle is seen as a defect. It appears in
red on the images. In apples the value is usually around 120 –
150 %

2.3.2 Defect Ir light and Ir dark

It permits to consider as defects, areas more or less dark

on the IR image (false blue color). When it is too sensible
the deformations are taken as defects.
In apples the value is usually around 220-245 for the light
IR and 225-232 for the dark IR.

Minimal surface of the defect in pixels.

In apples, the value is usually around 250-450

The « light Ir defects » are displayed in light blue. The “dark Ir defects” are those
containing a portion displayed in dark blue.

2.4 Quality sorting results

We obtain the results of the external quality of each fruit from the comparison between the
results of each defect and the corresponding limits.

 Light IR defect surface: surface of the biggest IR defect (light and dark) on all views.
 Number of light IR defects: number of defects (light and dark) accounted on all views.
 Dark IR defect surface: surface of the biggest IR defect (light and dark) on all views.
 Number of dark IR defects: number of defects (light and dark) accounted on all views.
 Russet defect surface: total surface of russet on the weighted set of views according to
the diameter of the fruits.
 Colour defect: total surface of the defect on all views.
 Similarity defect: total surface of the defect on all views.

3.2 Statistics Choice of the result to display

Reset of the result statistics displayed.

The statistical results of fruits (per line) are automatically reset at the end of each batch.

The statistics by camera (L, R, B, Ir) are only initialized by pressing this button.

These statistics provide information about the distribution of the colour and quality results in
the current batch.
They help to determine the limits of sizing of each colour or type of defect.
They also detect a malfunction on a line or a camera
(A leaf in a separation for example).
