Fall 2016

STAT2001 Midterm Examination

Instructions: It is a 1.5-hour Exam. Do all six questions. Show your steps clearly.
Give the best answer to each question.

Question 1:

Suppose that in a hospital, number of babies born follows a Poisson process with a rate of 3
births per day.

(a) (5 marks) What is the probability that at most 2 babies are born during the next 5 hours?
(b) (5 marks) What is the expected number of births for a period of 5 days?

Question 2:

(a) (6 marks) Two fair dice are rolled. What is the conditional probability that at least one
lands on 6 given that the two dice land on different numbers?
(b) (6 marks) An urn contains 3 white balls and 10 black balls. A fair die is rolled once and
that number of balls is randomly chosen from the urn (i.e. for example if the rolled die
lands on 4, you randomly choose 4 balls from the urn). What is the probability that all of
the balls chosen are white?
(c) (6 marks) Consider a set S={A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I,J}. How many subsets of size 4 (i.e.
subsets with 4 elements) of S contain at least one of the three elements A, B, C?

Question 3:

Four buses carrying a total of 148 students from the same school arrive at a football stadium.
The buses carry, respectively, 40, 33, 25, and 50 students.

(a) (6 marks) One student is randomly selected from the 148 students. Let X be the number
of students that were on the bus carrying this randomly selected student. Write down the
probability mass function of X. Find E(X).
(b) (6 marks) One driver is randomly selected from the four drivers. Let Y be the number of
students that were on the selected driver’s bus. Find E(Y) and Var(Y).
