Indian Standard
RECOMMENDED SHORT-CIRCUiT RATINGS
OF HIGH VOLTAGE PVC CABLES

0. FOREWORD

0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institu-
tion on 13 September 1970, after the draft finalized by the Conductors and
Cables Sectional Committee had been approved by the Electrotechnical
Division Council.

0.2 This standard has been drawn up to provide to the user’s general
guidance on the short-circuit ratings of high voltage heavy duty PVC
sables covered by IS :1554 ( Part II )-197o*,

HPCL, VISAKH Refinery.

Date 27-12-2010 Time 16:50:08
, ().3 The short-circuit rat~ngs?f conductor as well as the short-circuit ratings
>f armouring for the varrous sizes of cables of the following voltage grades
are included “in this standard.
Voltage Grades Corresponding UO/U .MOmeaclatrm
1.9/3.3 kV
3.3 kVf
{ 3.3/3.3 ILv
66 kV ( earthed) 3%/6.6 lcV
6s6 kV ( unearthed) 66/66 Iiv
11 k%l ( earthed) 6“35/11 kV

0.4 The short-circui} ratings of armo~ring assume that electrical continuity

exists between the ddlerent armour wne strands.

0.5For. thm-~re 1~ kv ( earthed) eabks, the short-circuit ratings of

armourmg -takemto account the relief to armouring provided by the metallic
shields over individual cores. As mentioned in IS: 1554 ( Part 11 )-1970*,
it is important to bond the shields and the armour at every joint and
termination. Further, the continuity bond between the armourings of the
two lengths involved in any joint shall have electrical cross section not
less than the combined effective electrical cross seetion of the armour and
metallic shields.
*Spcei6cation for PVGinsulatcd (heavy duty) electric cables: Part 11 For working
voltages from *3 kV up to and including 1! kV.
tThe 3“3 kV cables speeitied in IS: 1554 ( Part II )-1970 arc mitable for w ia
33 kV ( earthed.) or 3-3 kV ( unearthed) systcnm

IS : 5819- 1970

0.6 For the purpose -of deciding whether a particular requirement of this
standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated,
expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with
IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off
value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard covers the recqmmended short-circuit ratings of high

voltage heavy duty PVC cables conforming to IS : 1554 ( Part II )-1970t.

2. TEMPERATURE LIMITS

2.1 The short-circuit ratings are based on the following temperature

limits:
Voltage Grade of Conductor Temperature, “C Armour Temperature, “C
