Science Clubbing: The Cradle of Valor

By Kathlea Joy B. Batan

The coconut tree is considered the “Tree of Life”. From its roots up to its leaves,
everything is operable just like science, though sometimes, it could also turn into an
Antirrhinum. Science navigates the colossal space of knowledge, wisdom, and life. It’s a free
encyclopedia of both biotic and abiotic forms, elements of the earth from fire to water as well as
the entire universe. The epoch of science has no beginning and end. From the aeon of
Phanerozoic up until this time of the pandemic, it guided humanity to generate a booming
civilization. It moulded the vision of the great people to discover things such as matter, the
concept of the universe, invent things like computers and other machines that can ease
everyone’s life. But sometimes, its stewardship is being quested by blazing storms like the
threatening issue about the Earth’s bodies of water and the present suffering from the global
pandemic. Its body is being wrecked. Yet above all this, science never sink. Instead, it just grows
vigorously over time and knots a more united corporation. The wonder of this conception will
appear. How can such a thing prevail over fiasco? How can science clubbing still build its
resiliency amidst all the crises we face today and flag the importance of raising dialogues that
aim to protect the Earth’s hydrosphere?
Science is defined as the study of the natural world based on facts learned through
experiments and observations. Scientists claim that science can explain anything, and it
surrounds the human race. It buttressed the ancient people to live life efficiently and
comfortably. In the old times, their nights are dim and cold. They still haven’t learned how to
cook their foods, therefore, they only depend on raw meals. Gloomy days come to an end when
they discovered fire. Through friction, they were able to produce a fire that can keep them warm
and cook their food. As time goes by, they have been able to distinguish edibles from poisonous
plants. They contrived tools that helped them with their works, and stand as a weapon and
armour against wild creatures. Bodies of water were still pristine back then hence clean water
was never their problem, yet today we learned processes like distillation and sterilization to
purify water. Today, culinary has evolved with the help of various styles of cooking. We can
steam, grill, fry and bake and these were all became possible because of heat, pressure and
conduction. Mending an illness became facile. Scientists have developed a cure for different
diseases like polio and cancer treatment. Headaches and colds are preventive by medicines that
can be in the form of tablets or syrup. Wounds and other body-related pain can be treated at a
building called the hospital. Speaking of building, science is also the pillar of a splendid society.
Infrastructure was made out of inventions. Convenient devices and gadgets were put on the
market. People around the globe have been more connected because of the upgraded
communication. Science also improved steam engines to electric engines that enable travelling
faster and smoother via well-crafted vehicles. This field made the viable exploration of man to
space. Astronauts were able to reach and examine the moon as well as take a view of Mars’
composition. They espy the structure of the universe and prolonged their study on how vast
space is.
But as civilization bloom, humans started to neglect their duty to their home, the nature
that has been always with them from the beginning until now. “News about Philippine floods
brought about by typhoons, the fire that burned in the Gulf of Mexico, threats to marine
biodiversity and ongoing debates about the West Philippine Sea prove the importance and
relevance of engaging the youth in discussions about the topic,” said Joshua Alex Binza, NSCM
2021 director. Earth’s hydrosphere is one of the reasons why humans are still existing. Above all
of its use to humanity, it is being gratified with plastics, chemical toxins and unwise utilization.
It is being taken for granted by people without knowing its adverse effect. Yes, many advocates
call out this issue and many sympathize yet few only act. Thousands of people die during strong
typhoons like the typhoon Haiyan in 2013 where more than 6000 people died. Today, even light
rain falls already floods areas of Manila and large parts of the Philippines, landslides also spikes
during these times caused by quarrying and deforestation. To sum it all up, humans are the ones
to blame for all of their dilemmas. Natural disasters are inevitable, but their suspicious
aftermaths can, only if people divert their attention and the use of science to resolve
environmental issues like saving and protecting water rather than building more establishments
and villages that would only fatten their bellies.
But the world’s imperfections also befall humanity. The 1918 influenza pandemic
challenged both. A total of 50 000 000 deaths were recorded at this time. Doctors and scientists
were lost in how it began and how can cure it. It was early 1920 when it all ended. The evolution
of science only surfaces when a man put an effort to delve into it because science won’t bright if
no one will light it up. Since then, health organizations have focused on studying and developing
cures such as vaccines to fight viruses and other health concerns sickness. The enhancement has
been observed over time until another conundrum arose. Currently, the world is suffering again
from a life-threatening virus. Coronavirus disease or also known as COVID-19. According to
research, cases of covid-19 first emerged in late 2019, when a mysterious illness was reported in
Wuhan China. The infection has since spread to many countries around the world that’s why
WHO announced that the outbreak should be considered a pandemic. The disease was
announced by the WHO that its official name would be covid-19, a shortened version of
coronavirus disease 2019.
Many speculations about the origin of this disease circulated in the public. Most of the
speculation states that it came from the bats or most likely some say it was engineered or some
kind of diseases that were made in the laboratory. Truly, Science if mishandled can be a form of
anomalies. Amidst the battle with COVID-19, this speculation contests science and its people.
But this became a short-lived issue since science itself made its field more advance. Researchers
responded easily through a scientific explanation and investigation. The origin has been clarified,
yet the virus is still taking its time to infect more people. Fortunately, today different countries
have mustered their courage and utilize scientific advancements to develop vaccines that can
treat the virus. Science played a big role in the process of making effective vaccines and now,
people are presented with a variety of these doses. Although in the surge of the distribution of
vaccines, variants of this virus intrude.
The wind howls yet science is steadfast against raging currents. In the bigger picture,
science is not alone in its battles. It only serves as the ship that will sail no matter how strong the
storm is. But without its captain and crew, its voyage will not assuage. This month, we celebrate
the National Science Club Month with its theme, “Riptide: Science Clubbing Steadfast against
Raging Currents”. With this, science clubbing, together with the subject and its proponents,
reaches its greater heights of victory against all odds. The question of how tight the rope of
science is could be perspicuous. The trace of its essentialities has been well registered on the
golden record thus making it the mirror of knowledge and the wisdom that humanity exercises
today.
People are humans but few are humane. Science is an all-around tool, and people should
learn that its essence does not only presents their needs and desires as the highest forms of beings
in the world. Earth’s hydrosphere runs through their bodies thus reminding us that for both life
and water to survive needs both man and science to strive. In connection with the month-long
celebration, aside from this year’s NSCM aim to highlight both the resilience of science clubbing
in the country, they also uphold the importance of raising dialogues that aim to protect the
Earth’s hydrosphere.
Science will continue its legacy as long man exists, for its beauty only rose when one can
appreciate it. Human race life is blessed to be accompanied by science. It’s the field of powerful
abstracts hence can overuse. Science clubbing is a team of science and mankind, and every man
is different. One could put it to good use and one could corrupt its power. But nowadays, as we
face a great calamity we beseech its proponents to put it to good use thereupon sun would shine
again. The patience and courage of the troop may be tested by time, yet the fact that both science
and its people are still fighting goes to show that Science Clubbing is the Cradle of Valor.
