Francisco Goya

Francisco Goya contributed majorly to the modern art. Born in 30th march 1976 in
Fuendetodos, Spain and died on April 16th 1828 in Bordeaux, France, Goya came to be known
for his subversive works especially on the royal portraits. Goya, being the son of guilder, he
stayed in Saragossa for some of his youth life. At around the age of fourteen Goya began his
studies in portrait, as a student of José Luzán Martínez he learnt by imitation. He furthered his
education in Rome Italy at around 1770 where he studied classic works. Goya worked for the
Spanish royal courts from 1779. Unfortunately in 1792 he suffered an unknown illness which left
him deaf. Due to political reasons Goya run to exile, France where he spent the rest of his life.
His major works include; ‘’The Third of May 1808, 1814’’, ‘’The Nude Maja, 1797-1800’’,
‘’The Clothed Maja, 1798-1805’’, ‘’Charles IV of Spain and His Family, 1800-1801’’ and
‘’Saturn Devouring His Son, 1819-1823’’. Goya major contribution is in aquatint and etching.
Goya rebel against the tradition of perfect likeness. His work was characterized by realistic
landscapes which depicted the nature of beauty where he was nurtured. To me Goya was very
talented in flattering portraits. He wanted to communicate the way he felt about the society
through his work on portraits, the negative things that he noted in the society. His artistic works
in paintings, drawings, and engravings reflected contemporary historical upheavals and had great
influence to the painters of 19th and 20th century.
