(6 marks} INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS Definition of Terms > What is a Computer? A computer is an electronic device which is capable of accepting data as input, processes it to produce information as output and stores the information for later use. > Computer is an advanced electronic device that takes raw data as input from the user and processes these data under the control of set of instructions. > Information ~ is processed data, The basic components of a modern digital computer are: Input Device, Output Device, Central Processing Unit (CPU), mass storage device and memory. Four functions of a computer are: Accepts data Input Processes data Processing Produces output Output > Stores results Storage Main components of a computer system: Hardware and software: Hardware refers to the physical components of a computer which you can see and touch such as a keyboard, mouse, printer or monitor. Software, also called a program, is a set of instructions that tells the computer and its devices what to do. Hardware cannot function without software. Examples of software are Windows Media player, Microsoft office etc. Hardware components are grouped into five categories: Input devices Processing Output Storage Communication Justify the entire document and apply a line spacing of 1.5.
