Ingredients in Product Labels!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both
from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming
their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their

Lesson Physical Science: Active
1 Ingredients in Product
Labels
Good day! Today we will learn about active ingredients in your cleaning
products. Do you know that cleaning products contain substances that
remove dirt, stain, and bad odor? There are lot of cleaning products, perhaps
you have a shelf full of them. Chances are, you have something that cleans
floors, glass, a carpet, another bottle for toilet bowl and so on. But do you
really know what’s in them?

What’s In

ACTIVITY 1: SHOW AND TELL!

Objective: This activity will allow you to tell the different cleaning agents
frequently used at home.

Direction: Below are drawings of cleaning agents. Can you name them?
What’s New

All products contain an active ingredient that enables it to work. Some

of them only have one active ingredient, while others contain more than one.
Cleaning managers choose their active ingredients based on performance and
desired effect, but it may not be enough just knowing what the products do.
So, knowing the “active ingredients”, usually in a water solution form the
backbone of cleaning ingredients.

Note to the Teacher

Let students prepare the needed materials before the activity.

ACTIVITY 2: DESCRIBE ME!

Objective: This activity will allow you to describe some active ingredients
found in cleaning products.

Direction: Inside the box are some of the active ingredients in your cleaning
products. You can write your answer on a piece of paper.

Hydrogen peroxide Enzymes D-Limonene

Sodium Hypochlorite Ammonium Compounds Phosphoric Acid

Sulfuric Acid Boric Acid Phenol Ammonia

___________ 1. Is a colorless, soluble alkali gas that occurs naturally in the

environment. When used in cleaning compounds, it’s called “household
ammonia”.

___________ 2. It works by oxidizing or breaking down the molecular bonds of

stains and germs.

___________ 3. It is a neutral compound extracted from citrus rind.

___________ 4. Used in degreasers, drain cleaners and stain removers.

___________ 5. An acidic disinfectant, it works as an oxidizer, treats drinking
water and antiseptic.

___________ 6. Is a manufactured substance used in disinfectants and resins.

___________ 7. Derived from ammonia ion and are used as disinfectants.

___________ 8. It is often used as antiseptic, insecticide, flame retardant,

neutron absorber, or precursor to other chemical compounds.

___________ 9. A clear, colorless to brownish, dense, oily, corrosive, water-

miscible liquid usually produced from sulfur.

___________ 10. Used to remove cement grout haze and mortar residue joint
cement, lime and hard water deposits, rust and other dirt.

Before we will go on further, here are the Key points about an active
ingredient?

Active Ingredient
 is the compound that acts to fulfill the function of the said product.
 is the reactive and functional ingredient of a household product.
 may have several mechanisms where it can remove stains from acid-
base, oxidation-reduction, disinfectants, surfactants and dissolution
(solvent-solute interaction).
 in cleaning products are usually antimicrobial pesticides added to kill
bacteria, viruses, or molds.

ACTIVITY 3: AM I ACIDIC OR BASIC?

Objective: After performing this activity, you will determine whether the
following cleaning agents are acidic or basic using an onion as indicator.

Materials Needed:

5 clear glass water

1 pc. onion 5 ml bleach
1 bowl 1 pc. lemon
1spoon/ Dropper 5 ml vinegar
1 set of knife and chopping board a Spoonful baking powder
Mixer/ Blender (if available) strainer
Precautions:

Onion juice will cause severe eye irritation, avoid close contact with eyes.

Keep the sharp edge of the knife away from your body.

Procedures:

1. Chop the onion into smaller pieces. (Use blender/ mixer if

available)
2. Put the chopped onions in one container and add small amount of
water.
3. Strain the juice of the onion into a glass.
4. Put the bleach, lemon juice, vinegar, baking powder in separate
containers.
5. To test the pH level of the different cleaning agents, put a drop of
onion juice in each container.
6. Observe the color of the different cleaning agents for 2 minutes.
7. Record your observations on Table 1.

Determine the acidic or basic nature of your sample using the color scheme
below using onion as indicator and record the nature of each sample in Table
1.
acid: red or pale red
neutral: purple
base: greenish yellow

Table 1. Acidic or basic nature of cleaning agents

All products have an active ingredient that enables it to work. Some
products only have one active ingredient while others may have more the one.
The following are some of the factors you need to know and consider in
knowing the active ingredients of a product.

1. Active ingredient can be acidic, basic, or neutral.

2. The determination of its acidity or alkalinity often indicates how the
product will work.
3. Active ingredient must always be indicated in the product’s label.

Question:

1. What conclusion can you make using onion as indication in

determining the acidity or alkalinity of cleaning agents?
What is It

When is the last time you actually read the label of a cleaning
product? Do you know that it is important to read the label of chemicals you
used? Today, we are going to look at product labels and identify the active
ingredient in them.

ACTIVITY 4: I CAN SEE YOU!

Objective: This activity will let you identify the active ingredients listed in the
product label of the common cleaning products.

Direction: The following are samples of product

labels. Can you identify their active ingredients?

Note to the Teacher

Let learner identify one or
more active ingredients in a
cleaning product.
