Rediscover Our Dignity

Each human person is a unique and unrepeatable being. Each of us has dignity.
Dignity because we were created in the “image and likeness” of God. Dignity
because in Christ, our Savior and Redeemer, that divine image altered by the first
sin was restored to its original beauty and ennobled with the grace of God. We are
sons and daughters of God! We are called to eternal life, to the glory of Heaven.
Because of our “spiritual and immortal” soul, we are “the only creature on earth
whom God has loved for its own sake” (Second Vatican Council, Gaudium et
Spes, 24).
Because we have intelligence, we can understand the order of things established by
the Creator. Because we have a will, we can direct ourselves to true good. We find
fulfillment in the search and love of truth and good. Our freedom is the eminent
sign of our divine image.
We manifest and express our dignity through our understanding, our will, our
moral conscience, and our freedom. We can understand the world and give
meaning to our existence, we have the ability to choose and act responsibly.
At the same time, we daily experience that many of us are wounded, hurt, broken.
We discover people without hope, discouraged, immersed in pain, sadness,
anguish, confusion, doubt. We see that struggle between good and evil, between
light and darkness.
The parables of the gospel remind us of loss, encounter, and joy. A lost object (a
coin), a lost animal (a sheep) that bring joy when found. But, above all, the great
joy is because the lost son, after reflecting on his miserable situation, found himself
again with God, with himself and with other human beings. “It is necessary to
celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come back to life, he
was lost, and we have found him” (Luke 15:32)

Redescubrir Nuestra Dignidad

Cada persona humana es un ser único e irrepetible. Cada uno de nosotros tiene
dignidad. Dignidad porque fuimos creados a “imagen y semejanza” de Dios.
Dignidad porque en Cristo, nuestro Salvador y Redentor, esa imagen divina
alterada por el primer pecado fue restaurada en su belleza original y ennoblecida
con la gracia de Dios. ¡Somos hijos e hijas de Dios! Estamos llamados a la vida
eterna, a la gloria del Cielo.
Por nuestra alma “espiritual e inmortal”, somos “la única criatura en la tierra a la
que Dios ha amado por sí misma” (Concilio Vaticano II, Gaudium et Spes, 24).
Porque tenemos inteligencia somos capaces de comprender el orden de las cosas
establecido por el Creador. Porque tenemos voluntad somos capaces de dirigirnos
por nosotros mismos al bien verdadero. Encontramos la plenitud en la búsqueda y
el amor de la verdad y del bien. Nuestra libertad es el signo eminente de nuestra
imagen divina.
Manifestamos y expresamos nuestra dignidad por medio de nuestro entender,
nuestro querer, nuestra conciencia moral y nuestra libertad. Podemos entender el
mundo y dar sentido a nuestra existencia, tenemos la capacidad de elegir y actuar
responsablemente.
Al mismo tiempo, diariamente experimentamos que muchos de nosotros estamos
heridos, lastimados, quebrados. Descubrimos personas sin esperanza, desanimadas,
inmersas en el dolor, la tristeza, la angustia, la confusión, la duda. Vemos esa lucha
entre el bien y el mal, entre la luz y las tinieblas.
Las parábolas del evangelio nos recuerdan la pérdida, el encuentro y la alegría. Un
objeto (una moneda) perdido, un animal (una oveja) perdido que traen alegría al
ser encontrados. Pero, sobre todo, la gran alegría es porque el hijo perdido, luego
se reflexionar en su miserable situación, se encontró de nuevo con Dios, consigo
mismo y con los otros seres humanos. “Es necesario hacer fiesta y regocijarnos,
porque tu hermano estaba muerto y ha vuelto a la vida, estaba perdido y lo hemos
encontrado” (Lucas 15,32)
Para reflexionar: ¿Qué puedo hacer de modo diferente esta semana para vivir
plenamente según mi dignidad de hijo e hija de Dios?
