This document provides the homework assignment for Math 601 for Spring 2015. The homework is due on January 29th and involves 7 problems: 1) computing fundamental groups by removing points, lines, and circles from Rn; 2) computing the fundamental group when identifying the north and south poles of two spheres; 3) showing the fundamental group of a product is the product of fundamental groups; 4) showing the fundamental group of a topological group is abelian; 5) determining if a given function is a covering map and possibly modifying it; 6) showing a connected non-orientable manifold has a 2-fold covering that is connected and orientable; and 7) showing the Klein bottle has two 2-fold coverings, one orient

Homework 1 Due Thursday January 29 at1pm in Chris Hays mailbox
(1) Compute, for a fixed n ≥ 2, the fundamental group of:
• Rn minus a point. • Rn minus a line. • Rn minus a line and a circle. There are several possible configurations. Determine, if possible, which ones are not homotopy equivalent. The main case is n = 3. (2) Let X be the space obtained from the union of two 2-spheres where the two North Poles are identified to one point, and the two South Poles are identified to one point. Compute the fun- damental group of X. (3) Show that the fundamental group of a product is the product of the fundamental groups. (4) Show that the fundamental group of a (path connected) topo- logical group is abelian. (5) Is f : C → C given by f (z) = ez a covering? If not, can I modify this to make it into a covering? (6) Let M be a (path) connected non-orientable differentiable man- ifold. Show that there is a two fold cover which is (path) con- nected and orientable. (7) Show that the Klein bottle has two 2-fold covers, one is ori- entable and the other is not.
