A hollow and solid circular shaft in Figure Q1(a) and Figure Q1(b), respectively have the
same length and are designed to receive 800 Nm internal torque. Determine the maximum
shear stress for both shafts and identify which of the two shafts have the higher angle of twist.

A 6 m length of circular steel hollow (CSH) column has an outer diameter, D = 100 mm and
thickness, t = 12 mm as shown in Figure Q2. Determine the allowable load, Pall of the column
if it is pinned supported at both ends. Taking the modulus of elasticity, E = 200 GPa and factor

a) Determine the maximum deflection in terms of constant EI and identify its location using
