Options beginning with “C” are packaged in a ready-to-mix unit with the resin and catalyst separated by a
physical barrier by a third party packager. These options are equivalent (fit, form and function) to the same
option that does not begin with “C” and may be freely substituted by Design and Manufacturing.
1/ Specific batch sizes for options -C are listed in Table 6. The last two characters in the Table 6
option number indicates the base material option (e.g. -C215 is a 21.2 gram batch size for -C015 material
option). The -C options shall have the same material properties as the base material option.

1.0 SCOPE: This standard specifies the requirements for various options of epoxy based ink systems suitable for
screen printing or spraying onto glass, metal, gold and other non-porous surfaces. Intended use is for a two-
part marking ink which possesses good high temperature color retention and is resistant to acids, alkalines,
solvents and abrasion. This material is acceptable for low outgassing applications.

1.1. Classification: Catalysts supplied with the inks shall be of the types as listed below for the applicable
options listed in Table 1.

Type I: General purpose. For use on all substrates. Room temperature or heat cure.
Type II: For use on gold, glass, untreated aluminum and untreated titanium substrates. Heat cured only.

2.0 APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS: The following documents, of the issue in effect at the date of invitation for bids,
form a part of this standard to the extent specified herein.

MIL-I-43553 Ink, Marking, Epoxy Base

ASTM D 3359 Measuring Adhesion by Tape Test, Methods for
ASTM E 595 Total Mass Loss and Collected Volatile Condensable Materials from Outgassing in a
Vacuum Environment, Standard Test Method for
SV 553028 Material Properties and Test Matrix (Space Systems/Loral usage only)

3.0 REQUIREMENTS:

3.1. Material: The material shall be a two-part ink consisting of an epoxy resin containing a color additive
and a curing agent (catalyst), in accordance with the applicable option, as specified in Table 1.
3.2. Product Characteristics: The product characteristics of the material, as received, shall conform to 3.2.1
through 3.2.5.

3.2.2. Mixing Consistency: When mixed per Table 3 and MIL-I-43553, the ink base compound and the
curing agent shall mix freely to produce a homogeneous mixture free from skins, lumps, sediment
and precipitant materials. After mixing, the components shall not gel during the specified working
life (Ref.3.2.2), and chemicals that may separate shall be readily dispersible.
3.2.3. Working Life: When mixed per Table 3 and MIL-I-43553, the material shall have a minimum working
life of 6 hours at ambient temperature (25.0°C or less) when tested in accordance with 3.2.2.
3.2.4. Storage Life: The storage life of the material shall be at least 12 months from the original date of
manufacture when stored at or below 25°C. Options -C shall have at least 50% of the material
storage life (from original date of manufacture) remaining prior to shipment. After this period or following
opening the container, the storage life shall be controlled per the requirements of SV 553028 (SS/L
