The Numeral

Definition: The morphological part that counts, orders, multiplies and distributes things is the numeral.

Types: 1. Cardinal – counts things

621 – six hundred and twenty-one


3749 – three thousand seven hundred and fourty-nine
123456789 – one hundred and twenty-three million four hundred and fifty-six thousand seven hundred
and eighty-nine

2. Ordinal – orders things


3. Fractional – distributes things

1/2 – one-half / a half; 5/8 – five-eighths;


1/3 – one-third; 7/36 – seven thirty-sixths;
1/4 – one-fourth / a quarter; 33/100 – thirty-three hundredths;
1/5 – one-fifth; 65/1000 – sixty-five thousandths;
1/20 – one twentieth; 1 1/2 – one and a half;
1/32 – one thirty-second; 1 1/4 – one and a quarter;
2/3 – two-thirds; 3 2/5 – three and two-fifths;
4/5 – four-fifths; 6 3/7 – six and three-sevenths.
3/4 – three-fourths / three-quarters;

4. Multiplicative – multiplies things

1 – once, single 4 – fourfold, four times


2 – twice, double, twofold, two times 100 – a hundredfold, a hundred times
3 – thrice, triple, threefold, three times 145 – one hundred and fourty-five times

Use of numbers

1. Maths:

Two to the power of twelve = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 4096. 


It's much easier to write 2¹² = 4096. 

Digits: - make up numerals, and numerals stand for an idea of a number;


- used for phone no, addresses, Maths sciences
- zero is often pronounced oh
