COMPUTER

What is a Computer

 It is a device that accepts

structured input, stores it
temporarily in the memory,
processes it according to prescribed
rules and produces the results as
output.
 Computers exist in a
remarkable range of sizes,
shapes, abilities and
applications.
 They can be categorized
in different ways – among
them are class,
generation and mode of
processing.
 It is an
electronic,
programmable
device that can
store, retrieve and
process data
ELEMENTS
OF
COMPUTER
FIVE BASIC ELEMENTS

1. Electronic - All computers are

powered by electricity. They must
run on electricity in one form or
another, which means that they are
exclusively a product of the
Twentieth Century.
2. Programmable - A
computer must be able to follow
a set of instructions (called
programs) to operate.
3. Storage - A computer must
be able to store information
(like programs and data) to be
used at another time. This
computer feature turns the
machine into an electronic filing
cabinet.
4. Retrieve - On top of being
able to store information, a
computer must be able to
retrieve the information that it
has stored. Storing is
meaningless without the
capability to retrieve.
5. Process - Most importantly,
a computer must be able to
process information. In other
words, a computer must be able
to manipulate and transform the
information it has stored.
DATA
&
INFORMATION
Data

 Data is raw, unprocessed facts.

 It has the potential to become useful

information, but first it has to be
manipulated and transformed..

Data is what computers feed on.

Information

It is processed data.

It is data that has already been

manipulated and transformed into
something useful.

FUNCTIONS
OF
COMPUTER
Four Basic Functions

1. Input- The procedure of feeding data

into a computer is called Input. A typical
way of feeding - or entering - data into a
computer is by typing on a keyboard.

2. Process- This is the operation of

manipulating and transforming data into
something useful. A program , which is a set
of written instructions, is what tells the
computer how to manipulate and transform
the data it was given into information.
3. Output- This is the result of the
processing function. Once data has been
processed into information, the computer
them must produce and present that
information in a form that you can
understand. Two common computer
output types are information displayed on
a monitor screen, and information printed
on paper.

4. Storage- Computers can save data so

that it can be used at another time. This is
one of the great advantages of computers.
BENEFITS
OF
COMPUTER
Computer Benefits

1.Increased Productivity
they can increase the amount of work
we can do in a given amount of time.

2. Information Management
The computer's ability to let us process
and store massive amounts of data, and its
ability to convert this data into useful
information, is a great information
management tool.
3. Improved Communication
Any personal computer owner can
tap into the vast world of electronic
information without leaving home.
You can also access information from
some big computer databases using
remote terminals (e.g. ATM).
ADVANTAGES
OF
COMPUTER
Computer Advantages

1.Speed - Once data has been stored into a

computer, the computer can process data
into information much faster than any
human being using any other tool.

2.Accuracy - If the computer has been

given the correct instructions (program),
the information it will provide will be
totally and consistently accurate.
3. Repeatability- This is the computer's
capability of doing the same task repeatedly,
quickly and without complaint.

4 Programmability- Computers have the

advantage of being programmable. You can
write your own programs that will make the
machine do exactly what you need it to do.
