1. Work in groups and discuss the following statements:

• What do you know about the basic Math operations? Mention them,
which one is your favorite?

RTA/ The basic operations of mathematics are very useful for everyday life
because that way we know how much they have to give us back when buying.
The multiplication helps us to know when we buy one thing, but we want to
take several and we need to know how much they cost.

- Alisson Hernandez: My favorite operation is division.

- Michell Moreno: My favorite operation is multiplication.

• When is it common to use Math? Give some examples.

Mathematics, although we do not see it, we use it every day both to know how
much the bill adds up when we buy lunch and also to know how much we
have to get back.

EXAMPLE

- Juan is going to buy some potatoes worth $1,800 and he has a $5,000
bill. How many do they have to pay back? He has to pay her back $3,200.

- Six friends want to know how many candies they have altogether if
they put them all together. They each have 5 candies in their bag.
How many candies will they have altogether? 5 candies for 6 bags is
equal to 30 candies, which are the ones they have in total among all
the friends.

- 10 ÷ 5 = 2, so 2 times 5 equals 10 units.

• Which basic Math operation is difficult to you?

- Alisson Hernandez: I find the rest difficult.

- Michell Moreno: I find it difficult to divide.

2. Skills practice: do the following activities to practice the learnt vocabulary and
English structures.

2.1 LISTENING PRACTICE: video about basic math vocabulary

Before watching the video, find the definition for the following words
- OPERATIONS: An operation is the application of an operator on the
elements of a set that has. The operator takes the initial elements and
relates them to another element of a final set that may or may not be of
the same nature; this is technically known as the composition law.

- ADDITION: The sum or addition is one of the four basic operations of

arithmetic that consists of the addition of two or more elements to reach a
final result where everything is included. The sum can be any element of
both natural numbers, integers, decimals, fractions, real and complex or
algebraic expressions.

- MULTIPLICATION: Arithmetic operation that consists of calculating the

result (product) of adding the same number (multiplier) as many times as
another number (multiplier) indicates; It is represented with the signs · or
×.

- CALCULATION: Action of doing the necessary mathematical operations

to find out the result, value or measure of something, in numerical
expression.

- MATH SYMBOLS: To represent operations and relationships between

values. Symbols are images that represent something. In general, the
symbols are known within the context in which they are found. In
mathematics, symbols often represent operations or relationships
between numbers or values.

- EQUALS: It is the equal sign = to represent the numerical equivalence of

the quantities, which are on either side of the sign.

- PLUS: The plus sign (+) is used to identify positive numbers.

- MINUS: The minus sign (-) is used to identify negative numbers.

- TIMES: It reads "three times four" and yet the most widespread form of
the multiplication tables seems to be this. , that is, the same as reading
"three multiplied by four" and with four, therefore, as a multiplier.

- DIVIDED: Division is that mathematical operation by which it is a question

of decomposing a number, which we will call the dividend, into as many
parts as indicated by another number, which we will call the divisor.

- BY: The factor a is also called the multiplicand. The factor b is also called
the multiplier. The product (c) is the result of the multiplication. For its
notation, the sign x or · is used between the factors, which is read "by"
- ADD: Addition is one of the basic operations of arithmetic that consists of
joining two or more numbers into one. This elementary operation is usually
carried out with elements that belong to the same set, that is, that are
similar or equal to each other.

- SUBTRACT: Subtraction or subtraction is an arithmetic operation that is

represented by the sign (−); represents the operation of removing objects
from a collection. For example, in the image to the right there are 5 − 2
apples; meaning 5 apples with 2 removed, making a total of 3 apples.

- DIVIDE: Division is that mathematical operation by which it is a question

of decomposing a number, which we will call the dividend, into as many
parts as indicated by another number, which we will call the divisor.

- BE GOOD: Mathematical and reading ability are largely determined by the

same genes, according to a study published Wednesday in Nature
Communications, which nevertheless underlines the importance of the
environment for a person's development.

- BAD AT MATH: 'Math trauma' manifests as anxiety or fear, a debilitating

fear of being wrong. This fear limits access to many people's life paths,
including school and career options.

Read and write the results to each one the exercises below1
2.2. READING PRACTICE : Read the article

Before reading: work in pairs and discuss what you understand from the
vocabulary and expressions
below:

- INDIA: It is a country in South Asia, it is one of the largest countries in the

world.

- CASTING DOUBT: A state of uncertainty, where there are doubts there

are no certainties

- GLOBAL CURRENCIES: Most of the world's transactions are carried out

- ECONOMISTS: Person professionally dedicated to economics

- PRESSURE: It is obtained by dividing the applied force over the

corresponding area.

- WEAKENING ECONOMY: This means that, in the country, the productive

apparatus of goods and services is misaligned

- UNDER: In a place that is in a lower position than another that is taken as

a reference and in its same vertical; there may or may not be contact.

- ATTACK: Violent or impetuous action against someone or something to

harm, destroy or defeat.

- STABILITY: Stability is the ability of the elements of the structures to

withstand actions without overturning or falling.

- THE SYSTEM: Orderly set of rules and procedures that regulate the
functioning of a group or collectivity.

- GLOBAL FINANCIAL MARKETS: International financial markets

constitute a system where actors from different countries trade investment
instruments. These are mainly participations in companies and debt
(public and private).

- KEEPING FAITH: Faith is the belief, trust or assent of a person in relation

to something or someone and, as such, it manifests itself above the need
to have evidence that demonstrates the truth of what is believed.
• Read the text again and find the definition of the underlined
words/expressions. Give some examples.

- GREENBACK: Rough or carve wood or stone with a large ax or chisel.

- RESERVES: Things that are reserved for another time when they are
needed or for some suitable or special circumstance.

monetary flow or cash flow operations are organized and managed. This
includes charges for company activities, payments to suppliers, bank
transactions and any other movement of a company's cash.
