adding Machine, known as Pascaline in the year 1642. It was the first ever mechanical
and automatic calculating machine or calculator. It could perform addition and
subtraction. Multiplication can also be done by repeated addition.
2. Napier’s Bones: John Napier in 1617 developed a manually operated calculating
device named as Napier’s Bones. It was world’s first calculator that could multiply, divide
and find square root of a number.
2. Answer the following questions:
1. How does an ABACUS work? Explain.
ANS:With an abacus, the thumb and the index finger together with themiddle finger
are used to manipulate the beads. Beads in lower deck are moved up with the thumb and
down with the index finger. In certain calculations, the middle finger is used to move
beads in the upper deck.
2. What is the contribution made by Charles Babbage in the history ofComputers?
Explain.
ANS: In the year 1822 Charles Babbage designed and developed a machine, known as
Difference Engine. This machine could perform most of the mathematical calculations. In
1833 he designed another machine named as Analytical Engine which could perform the
tasks based on instructions. He gave the concept of first form of computer and for this
reason Sir Charles Babbage is known as Father of Computer.
3. What are the characteristics of computers? Explain.
ANS: 1. Speed: It can perform thousands of mathematical operations in a fraction of a
second. The processing speed depends upon the type ofprocessor used in the computer.
2. Accuracy: Computer system is a highly accurate electronic device. It performs each
and every calculation with the same accuracy. An error may occur due to technical or
feeding incorrect data.
3. Storage: The storage capacity of a computer is very high. It can be increased if
required. The data storage capacity is measured in bytes, KB(kilobytes), MB (Megabytes)
or TB (Terabytes).
4. Diligence: A computer does not get tired. It can work continuously for hours without
any error.
5. Versatility: A computer is a multi-purpose machine which can perform variety of tasks.
Such as to make animation and presentation, documents, play games, send e-mail, shop
online etc.
4. What are the limitations of computer? Explain with example.
ANS: 1. Computer cannot decide: In some situations, it becomesincapable of taking
decision and unable to judge. Like if the height ofperson is entered as -5 feet it cannot
justify the height of a person cannotbe a negative number.
2. Computer cannot think: A computer cannot think and decide whatcalculation it should
do. It only follows the given instructions to perform the task.
3. Computer cannot express ideas: The computer cannot take part in thediscussion on
anytopic on its own.
5. Who was Lady Ada Augusta?
ANS: Lady Ada Augusta was one of the disciples of Charles Babbage. It was her
contribution that made the computer a programmable machine. She is known as the First
Programmer of the Universe. The computer language ADA was named after her.
