SUBSEA BROKER REPORT January 2023
MONTHLY UPDATE
NORTH SEA
If January is an indication of the year to come, we are in for a wild ride. A plethora of W2W requirements soaked
up a lot of the idle tonnage that does not have forward commitments. Olympic have the Olympic Taurus open
prompt without any commitments but the likes of Havila Subsea, Normand Superior, Dina Star, and Horizon
Enabler are available prompt but have scopes fixed for the summer season. Hence, Charterers have lost majority
of their bargaining power in controlling the delivery and redelivery window. There has also been a handful of
scopes for LCV in May/June with owners quoting over USD 100,000/day for same. The smaller tonnage, sub 80 m
LOA, have also been busy with Glomar fixing away Glomar Wave to Helix and Glomar Supporter to ROVCO and
Stril Explorer was extended by MMT. As rates increase on traditional LCVs, we expect to see more of the ROVSV
scopes to be performed by smaller tonnage as Charterers requirement for crane capacity will price the assets
out of the ROV scopes. We still see larger assets absorbed into walk to work market with Siem Barracuda, Siem
Day and Ievoli Amber all fixed on W2W scopes of varying duration. Reach Subsea will take delivery Edda Sun, Go
Electra, Deep Cygnus and Olympic Triton later this year and they will mobilize an additional ROV on the Olympic
Zeus for a Saipem job in West Africa. We expect vessel availability to further decrease into the next quarter and
vessel, ROV and gangway rates to follow suit.
MIDDLE EAST
As we commence the start of the new year, we look back on 2022 as a very positive year for offshore markets
globally and regionally in the Middle East, and though risks exist, most signs point to this trend continuing in 2023.
Reports that an Oil company in India is preparing for an IMR Vessel tender to be released in Q2 this year and it is
expected to be a long term contract. Aureus is dry-docking in Sharjah before she commences her long-term
ONGC India contract which will be for 5 years. The Safeen Surveyor has been undergoing her drydocking this
month in Dubai ahead of her return to Abu Dhabi where she will continue her upgrade works to install an
integrated air diving system. Once complete, the MPSV vessel is due to commence an IRM contract in the
region. The MMA Pinnacle has continued to operate in Qatar for Saipem this month and is expecting to
continue on the project for the next 1-2 months. MPSV Bourbon Enterprise is still working in Qatar with Qatar
Energy. CCC Underwater Engineering's DSV Said Aletheia completed a project this month which concluded 151
days of operations for an EPC contractor in the Middle East. The work involved several scopes, including the
installation of concrete mattresses, sleepers, subsea riser clamp installations, umbilical installations, saturation and
air diving and ROV surveys. Posh Mallard has been working in Qatar this month and should be occupied until the
summer, she is now equipped with a saturation diving system.
During the month, tendering activity remained high, in part due to ADNOC's plans of upgrading and developing
several oil and gas fields in its offshore concession areas.
Stronger vessel demand and supply-side constraints are expected to boost day rates further, though risks from
the global macro-economic outlook deserve careful monitoring. Oil prices currently remain supportive, and
despite the recent softening to c.$80/bbl, the offshore sector seems well set for further progress.
WEST AFRICA
January continued with the same trends we have seen in previous months: high utilisation and a constrained
supply which explains why we have not seen any major decline in seasonal rates that we usually experience.
In terms of vessel activity, Bourbon Evolution 802 is available. Go Supporter has been awarded a contract for 6 –
12 months from March, it is understood the vessel will leave for work in the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
The Boka Falcon has entered the Western Africa region and may have some availability towards the end of
February. The Atlantic Tonjer has been released from W2W duties with BW Offshore it is understood the vessel will
leave the region. Tullow Ghana are in the market for W2W duties in 2023. Later in this year, Reach will voyage the
Olympic Zeus down to the West Africa for work with Saipem.

AMERICAS
January has seen the Subsea Market for the US GOM pick back up and keep much of the fleet at a steady
pace. Rates have somewhat plateaued during the winter so will be interesting to see how the market progresses
into the summer months. There was a decent push at the end of the year and now with more vessels in the
market will we potentially see a shift to keep those vessel days in the 300s. Some notable activities from this
month. Ocean Patriot with Oceaneering is headed to the Caribbean. This is the first vessel leaving the gulf in the
new year as we saw some notable vessels from C-Innovation headed back to the US GOM in December and
January. This included the Dove (from the US Northeast) and the Island Performer (from the Caribbean). In
addition to these assets, the HOS Warland is anticipated to be out of shipyard to go into February which will bring
the 250T US Flagged vessels back up to 100%. In more Hornbeck news, the HOS Achiever has stepped in at
Constitution for Oxy with the HOS Riverbend likely returning middle of February.
Work is heating up for East Coast renewable work as we have started the year. With Offshore Wind on the cusp
of foundations in the ground, the anticipation is growing as seen in the article regarding vessel acquisitions. A lot
of companies making the leap as shown with Crowley / Esvagt winning the third SOV new-build for Siemens
Gamesa.
ASIA PACIFIC
2022 was a year of positive progress for offshore oil and gas vessel market in APAC, and as we begin 2023 we
already see a similar shape forming.
Shelf Subsea's Southern Star has arrived in Papua New Guinea this month to commence work that is expected
for around 45 days. Shelf also currently has the Fire Opal working in Bangladesh to carry out pipeline inspection,
free span rectification, and maintenance. FTAI concurrently have the M/ Pioneer nearby offshore Chittagong.
Skandi Acergy has been making her way down to Australian waters this month ahead of work with Beach Energy
on the Otway Phase-5 development. The campaign execution will cover the installation of the subsea
infrastructure for four new Thylacine wells following the collection of equipment and transportation to the
offshore site. The subsea infrastructure includes the installation of subsea umbilical, flexible flowlines and
connectors, structures and rigid spools. The Skandi Acergy will likely leave the region again once her work scope
is completed. Crest Hydra remains on charter in Thailand with Beacon offshore until around Q3/Q4 2023. Also in
Thailand, the Grand Canyon II is now on decommissioning project with Chevron Thailand via Beacon Offshore
until at least May 2023 with several extension options that could keep her busy until Q4 2023. The Normand Jarl,
which was operating in Taiwan until earlier this month is now alongside in Singapore ahead of her handover to
new owners which see her exit the offshore industry. Esso Australia has entered into an agreement with Helix
Energy Solutions to charter the Helix Q7000 semisubmersible light well intervention vessel to support
decommissioning activities in Gippsland Basin offshore Australia from end of 2023. The use of the Q7000 will be
Esso's first use of a light well intervention vessel for subsea work in Australian waters. FTAI's M/V Pride is back in
Australia this month for work with Expro on Chevron Gorgon and Jansz fields. The vessels newly fabricated well
intervention tower is now in Singapore, with engineering and preparations being carried out ahead of installation
onto the vessel, which is expected to take place upon return from her Australia work.
A flurry of market surveys and an increase in tender activity has been going on this month, with the bulk of the
requirements expected to increase demand further, especially between the months of May- September. Rates
have continued to improve in the region, albeit at a slower pace than we have been seeing in the Western
markets. Demand is still increasing in other regions like the Middle East and South America, so we expect more
vessels to exit the APAC space due to longer term contracts and more favourable rates.

Helms completes Geotechnical scope for PTTEP
offshore Sarawak
Utilising the DP2 Geotechnical vessel Keyfield Helms 1
(ex Keyfield Helms), Helms has carried out a
geotechnical survey the Nangka-1 exploration well in
block 417 offshore Sarawak for PTTEP. The work
involved pilot hole drilling for shallow gas, and
included sampling and several in-situ tests. The 2017
built Malaysian flagged vessel, Keyfield Helms 1 has
been used by PTTEP Thailand and Myanmar previously.
Helms has already confirmed a string of other projects
to follow this for Petronas and Shell.
Helms has a handful of long-term contracts in place
with Petronas, Shell and PTTEP currently. Helms has also
been keeping busy with projects in the renewables
sector, with past and ongoing projects in Taiwan,
Korea and Japan. Source: helmsgeomarine.com
