In this scene, Joey is talking about how he's going to make some quick
cash by participating in a scientific experiment. Joey says, "It's a fertility
study." Monica says, "Oh, Joey, please tell me you're only donating your
time." Joey says, "All right, come on, you guys, it's not that big of a deal.

Really, I mean, I just go down there every other day, and make my
contribution to the project. Hey, hey but at the end of two weeks, I get
$700." Ross says, "Hey." Phoebe says, "Wow, oh you're going to be making
money hand over fist."

That
So, first Joey says that it's not that big of a deal. So, that is just an intensifier
here, that gives more emphasis to the following expression or noun.
Another example might be if someone told you that a marathon is 42
kilometers, you could say, "Wow, I knew a marathon was long, but I didn't
know that it was that long."

Every other
And he says he's going to have to go down there every other day. So, every
other just means alternating, so every other day would mean if you go on
Monday, you're going to be also going on Wednesday, then Friday, then
Sunday, etc. And you can also use this with every other week, every other
month, every other hour, etc.

Hand over fist

When Joey says that he's going to be making $700, Ross says, "Hey." And
this isn't like hi or hello. It means like hey, that's a lot of money. It's just a
way of showing approval. So, obviously here, because Joey says that he is
going to be participating in a fertility study, Monica jokes "please tell me
you're only going to be donating your time".

A fertility study it means that he probably will be donating sperm. And so,
what he's going to be having to do is going there every day and
contributing to the project, contributing his sperm. And then, he'll get
paid. But Phoebe makes a joke, here, making a pun saying that he's going
to be making money hand over fist.

So, the most common meaning of this would mean quickly and in great
quantity, especially in reference to making or losing money. But this is also
a joke for masturbation, hand over fist. Pretty easy to imagine.
Page 2

So, again, Joey says, "It's a fertility study." Monica says, "Oh, Joey, please tell
me that you're only donating your time." Joey says, "All right, come on, you
guys, it's not that big of a deal. Really, I mean, I just go down there every
other day, and make my contribution to the project.

Hey, hey but at the end of two weeks, I get $700." Ross says, "Hey." Phoebe
says, "Wow, oh you're going to be making money hand over fist."

In this scene, Joey is talking about a new girl that he's seeing, Melanie. Joey
says, "I don't know, she's uh pretty great." Monica says, "Yeah? What does
she think of your little science project?" Joey says, "What? You think I'm
going to tell a girl I like that I'm also seeing a cup?" Monica says, "Man's got
a point." Joey says, "Well, the tough thing is she really wants to have sex
with me."

Chandler says, "Crazy bitch." Joey says, "Yeah, well, I still got a week left to
go in the program, and according to the rules, if I want to get the money,
I'm not allowed to conduct any personal experiments, if you know what I
mean?" Monica says, "Joey, we always know what you mean."

Seeing someone
So, when Monica asks Joey if he has told Melanie about the fertility study,
he says, "Do you think I'm going to tell a girl that I like that I'm also seeing
a cup?" So, this comes from the expression seeing someone, which we've
talked about in previous episodes, meaning dating. So, he's making a joke
here that he's also having relations with a cup, due to this fertility study.

Have a point
And then, Monica says, "This makes a lot of sense" she says, "The man's got
a point." To have a point means to be right about something. And this
collocation saying "the man's got a point" would be pretty common.

Thing is
And then, Joey kind of introduces the next thing he's going to say by
saying "the tough thing is" when we say the thing is it's just used to
introduce an explanation of a problem or an issue, or an excuse, or
something like that.
Page 3

Crazy bitch
He says that she really wants to have sex with him, and Chandler says,
"Crazy bitch." So, he's obviously being very sarcastic here, because why
would it be a problem that she wants to have sex with him?

Conduct
Well, it's a problem for Joey because the rules of getting paid for this
experiment, he's not allowed to have sex with anyone else. But he doesn't
say have sex, he says that he's not allowed to conduct any personal
experiments, if you know what I mean? First, conduct here means to do
something in an organized way, to carry something out. And to conduct
an experiment would be a very common collocation.

If you know what I mean?

And then, he ends it by saying, "If you know what I mean?" So, if you know
what I mean, when we're using a sexual innuendo, saying something that
sounds innocent, but really has a sexual connotation, we might end it by
saying, "if you know what I mean?" And then, Monica says, "Joey, we always
know what you mean" because Joey's always talking about sex.

In the rest of the episode we also see where he almost says again, "if you
know what I mean?" But then he cuts himself off, because Monica had
said this.

So, again, Joey says, "I don't know, she's uh pretty great." Monica says,
"Yeah? What does she think of your little science project?" Joey says,
"What? You think I'm going to tell a girl I like that I'm also seeing a cup?"
Monica says, "Man's got a point." Joey says, "Well, the tough thing is she
really wants to have sex with me."

Chandler says, "Crazy bitch." Joey says, "Yeah, well, I still got a week left to
go in the program, and according to the rules, if I want to get the money,
I'm not allowed to conduct any personal experiments, if you know what I
mean?" Monica says, "Joey, we always know what you mean.“

In this scene, Ross is disappointed because Rachel is having a date with

another guy. Joey and Chandler say that he needs to forget about Rachel,
as she hasn't shown any interest in him. Joey says, "Please, move on, go to
China, eat Chinese food." Chandler says, "Of course, there they just call it
food."

Ross says, "Yeah, I guess, I don't I don't know all right? Just just give her
this for me okay?" Joey says, "Listen, buddy, we're just looking out for you."
Ross says, "I know." Joey says, "We want you to be happy and I may only
have a couple of beers in me, but I love you, man." Chandler says, "I'm still
on my first, I just think you're nice."

Move on
So, first Joey tells Ross that he needs to move on. So, move on is a phrasal
verb meaning to just forget about some problem that you're having and to
continue with your life.

Look out for someone

Look out for someone is just to show your best intentions for someone's
wellbeing, or to do something to help someone not find themselves in a
bad situation, usually someone you care about.

Have a couple of beers in me

And then, Joey says, "I may only have a couple of beers in me, but I love
you, man." That's another way to say you've had a couple of beers. I have a
couple of beers in me. Generally, we would only use this collocation with
beer or with alcohol. We probably would not say this for having a couple of
Cokes in you.

Because generally, it is kind of referring to the inebriated state that you

have after drinking alcohol. And then, he's also making a reference here to
the fact that after you drink you usually are much more sentimental and
expressive of your feelings. Chandler makes a joke here that he's only his
first, so he's not drunk enough to say that he loves someone, yet.

So, again, Joey says, "Please, move on, go to China, eat Chinese food."
Chandler says, "Of course, there they just call it food." Ross says, "Yeah, I
guess, I don't know all right? Just just give her this for me okay?" Joey says,
"Listen, buddy, we're just looking out for you." Ross says, "I know." Joey says,
"We want you to be happy and I may only have a couple of beers in me,
but I love you, man." Chandler says, "I'm still on my first, I just think you're
nice."

In this scene, Monica is asking Joey how he's doing with his girlfriend
being that he can't have sex with her. Monica says, "Okay, how does
everybody like their burgers?" Rachel says, "Oh no, no, no, presents first,
food later." Monica says, "Hey, hold on there, tiger. How's it going? How are
you holding up?"

Joey says, "Well, not so good, she definitely thinks tonight is the night
we're going to complete the transaction if you know what I? And you do
haha." Monica says, "So uh, have you ever thought about being there for
her?" Joey says, "What do you mean? Monica says, "You know, just be there
for her." Joey says, "I'm not following you." Monica says, "Think about it."

How does one like something?

So, first Monica asks how does everybody like their burgers? So, when we
say this, how does someone like something it just means in what fashion
do you like it? So, in this case, how do you like your burger you could say,
"With ketchup, with mustard, with pickles, with lettuce, on a bun, no bun".
You could also describe the meat "rare, well done, etc".

Hold on there, tiger

And Rachel wants to open presents, Monica tells Joey, "Hold on there" this
just means wait. And a common collocation here would be hold on there,
tiger. You could use this with anyone, it could be a man, a woman, child. A
tiger is just a part of the expression.

How are you holding up?

Then, she asks, "How are you holding up?" This is just another way to say
how are you doing? Especially when someone is under pressure or in a
difficult situation.

Complete the transaction

Then, Joey says that Melanie wants to complete the transaction. So, this is
another sexual reference, he cuts himself off here saying, "If you know
what I mean?" So, it's kind of like if dating were the beginning of the
transaction, completing the transaction would be having sex.
Page 6

Be there for her, follow someone

Then, Monica asks has he thought about being there for her? Joey doesn't
know what she means, he doesn't follow her. To follow someone is just to
understand what someone is trying to say. What Monica means by this,
obviously, is that he could just please her in bed, without having to actually
break the contract that he has with his scientific experiment.

So, again, Monica says, "Okay, how does everyone like their burgers?"
Rachel says, "Oh no, no, no, presents first, food later." Monica says, "Hey,
hold on there, tiger. How's it going? How are you holding up?" Joey says,
"Well, not so good, she definitely thinks tonight is the night we're going to
complete the transaction if you know what I? And you do haha."

Monica says, "So uh, have you ever thought about being there for her?"
Joey says, "What do you mean? Monica says, "You know, just be there for
her." Joey says, "I'm not following you." Monica says, "Think about it."
