Congratulating Others
We usually congratulate others when they receive good achievements or celebrate special
occasions, such as birthday or wedding anniversaries.
The following are expressions to congratulate and respond.
Congratulating Responding
 Congratulations and bravo!  Thanks.
 Heartfelt congratulations to you  It’s very good of you to say so, thanks.
 This calls for celebrating! Congratulations!  Thanks. Let’s celebrate together.
 Congratulations on your hard-earned success!  Thanks. I wish for your success too.
 Congratulations and best wishes for your next  You’re right. Thank you for your
adventure! support.
 You’ve worked so hard for this. Congrats!  Thank you very much for saying so.
 Warmest congratulations on your achievement.  Thanks. It really makes me grateful.

Note:
Never say “Congratulation!” without ‘s’ when you congratulate others. You have to say
“Congratulations!”

Practice the following dialog with your friend.

Arya won a cooking competition.
Mawar : Arya, congratulations on your victory in the cooking competition! You deserve it.
Arya : Thank you. You also performed your best during the competition.
Mawar : Thanks, but still you’re the best. Anyway, your achievement has inspired young people
that we are talented and creative.
Arya : I’m glad to hear that.
Mawar : By the way, how did you learn to cook?
Arya : My father is always busy, but he is the best chef. His food is the most delicious. We
often cook in the kitchen together. While cooking, he always tells me how to cook and
prepare food well.
Mawar : What a great father!
Arya : Indeed. I am really proud of him. He always supports me, too.
Mawar : Do you get all the recipes from your father?
Arya : Few of them are my father’s recipes, but few others are from the Internet or recipe
books. On my spare time, I often try to create my own recipes, by combining the recipe
I have l ready known.
Mawar : You’re really creative! I am sure you will be a great chef on day.
Arya : Thanks. I love cooking and dream of having a big restaurant one day.
Mawar : May your dream come true.
Arya : Thanks. You too.

Mr. Dewa : Yeah! Do you want to watch the movie right now?
Mieke : No, I am interested in sightseeing this place.
Mr. Dewa : Let’s stroll around this airport and enjoy its attractions.
Mieke : What a great airport! It is very large and clean.
Mr. Dewa : You’re right. This place is very convenient and spoils the visitors.
Mieke : Look! There are a beautiful park and playground out there. Awesome!
Mr. Dewa : This airport truly harmonizes beauty and comfort for all ages of people.

Dian : Hi, Arga.
Arga : Hi, Dian. Please come in and have a seat.
Dian : Thanks. You are sweating. What have you done?
Arga : I just helped my mother catch catfish in the pond.
Dian : Good boy! Anyway, you have a large catfish pond, don’t you?
Arga : We do. The fish are big enough to harvest, so we plan to make crackers from the fish.
Dian : Crackers from catfish? Wow, it sounds yummy.
Arga : We have made some earlier. Would you like to taste it?
Dian : Sure, thanks.
