1 PURPOSE

The purpose of Pile Integrity test will be conducted in accordance with ASTM D 5882-00 on the
installed working piles at 9B package (STG)

The aim of testing is to assess and check the integrity of pile for potential problems like cross-
sectional changes, honeycombing, concrete quality, continuity etc.

2 SCOPE

The scope covers to execute Bored cast-in-situ piles at proposed location. Installation of Bored
Cast in-situ piling works involves various activities like boring, liner installation, cage lowering,
tremie lowering, concrete etc. including co-ordination of activities.

This document describes procedure for conducting low strain integrity tests on installed BCIS Pile
by measuring and analyzing the velocity response on pile.

3 REFERENCE DOCUMENT

Following documents in totality or in part shall form the reference documents -

 ASTM D 5882

4 ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

 Project Manager: Project Manager shall be responsible for overall management of all
construction activities at site.
 Construction Manager: Construction Manager is responsible for monitor the daily
construction activities at site.
 Safety Engineer: Safety Engineer shall be responsible for monitoring the works and
ensure all HSE requirements are implemented and complied during the job.
 Quality Manager: Quality Manager shall be responsible for overall Quality activities at
site.

activities and implementation of all plans

5 METHODOLOGY

The PIT will be performed using the most advanced wireless state of art data collection
system available to determine pile integrity by surface impact methods using a hand-held
hammer.
 The following step by step procedure will be adopted for carrying out initial or routine vertical pile load test.
 Location of the test pile will be identified as per the requirement.
 The pile is to be chipped at cut of level and cleaned the top surface.
 Prior information will be given to Engineer In charge (EIC) before start of test.
 The testing involves attachment of accelerometer on the pile top.
 After this attachment, impact device (a nylon tipped hammer) generates a low strain compressive wave,
which travel down the pile.
 The acceleration and velocity records of the impact, along with subsequent reflections from either pile toe
or discontinuities are graphically displayed.
 The integrity test methods separate the effect of impact and surface reflections from other relevant
reflections (i.e. pile toe or other discontinuities) by averaging records of several impacts.
 This average technique tends to cancel random signals in any particular blow while amplifying the effect of
the relevant repetitive response.
 The signal records obtained are also exponentially amplified with time. This enhances the Identification of
relevant reflections in records, which have low energy due to signals being dampened out by skin friction.
 Testing equipment figure 1 is below attached -

5.1 Method of Testing

 Pulse Echo Method (PEM)— The pile head motion is measured as a function of time. The time domain
record is then evaluated for pile integrity.
 Transient Response Method (TRM)—The pile head motion and force (measured with an Instrumented
hammer) are measured as a function of time. The data are evaluated usually in the frequency domain.
 Now we will use Pulse Echo Method.

5.2 Interpretation of Test Results

 The interpretation of results consists of evaluation of data based on the reflections

recorded during testing as described above.

 Reflections are produced by variations in shape, material, soil resistance changes, joints
etc. The deepest reflector is the pile's toe and its reflection is last observed. All such
reflections are in acceleration form and are numerically integrated to velocity before being
displayed.
 The integrity of the pile thus tested is based on such reflections and detected changes in
impedance (EA/C) along the pile length, when subjected to an impact blow. Here 'E' is the
elastic modulus of the pile material, 'A' is cross-sectional area of the pile and 'C' is the
wave speed. Impedance variation usually refers to cross-sectional change.

5.3 Limitations of the Test System

 For piles with greatly varying cross-sectional area especially in layered soils, it may be
difficult to distinguish relevant reflections due to construction method and those due to
localized discontinuities.

 Although the test system can be used to evaluate length of piles, the determination of pile
length is approximate due to variation in concrete density.

6 HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT

 All safety precautions shall be taken as per HSE specification of the project (B224 /6229-6-
82-001) and comply all statuary requirement.

7 DOCUMENTATION

 The pile integrity tests will conduct on pile top and results will be recorded in the following tabular format.
Pile integrity test details are recorded in site register and will signed by all parties at test location and
documented for submission through PIT report.
 The summary and assessment of PIT test results for the piles tested will be presented in a tabular format
as shown below as Table — 1.
 The typical pile integrity test graphs are attached in Annexure A.
