Power series.

Example 1: find a power series solution

You need substituting to the differential equations

Then into the equation you found

Using the distribution series, you can organize the first few terms of each one

Now you can see the order of the equation, but you need organize using the combine like terms

When the pattern is clear you can write again the equation like the first one like this form

You need to work with X, for this situation you need that every coefficient on the lefthand side
must be zero. The values of c1=0, and for all n>2
This equation defines the recurrence relation for the coefficients of the power solution.

You know that the equation hasn’t constraint on c0, c0 is constant, and c1=0. The last relation
understands that c2=1/2 c0 and c3=1/3c1 =0 because c1=0. This situation knows that all
coefficients with n odd will be zero and c4 the recurrence relation is

The solution of the power series is

The solution has c0 like an differential equation of first order. The power series is different that
the normal procedure because is possible express like an elementary function

You can prove that y=c0ex2/2 is the solution of the equation, y’=xy, remember that the equation
not be expressed in terms of elementary equations .
