BSCE 1A Discussion Post #3

Metals and Alloys

In this lesson, I have learned many topics, however the discussion regarding
corrosion picked my interest. Corrosion is a phenomenon that occurs on metals as
it is exposed to oxidization caused by natural chemical reactions. Generally, it
occurs when metal reacts with another substance, however, the process of
corrosion occurs in varying speed depending on some factors involved. There are
different types of corrosion that can occur to a metal which is as follows.

Uniform Corrosion
It is the most common type of corrosion as it
occurs naturally when carbon steel deteriorates
through a chemical reaction with the
environment causing the entire surface to
corrode.

Localized Corrosion

It occurs while affecting a specific location

on a metal surface.

Pitting Corrosion

It is a form of localized corrosion where

small breaks or hole are created in the
material.

Crevice Corrosion
It is a form of localized corrosion on a
physically occluded area at a particular
location on the metal surface where a
crevice is.
Filiform Corrosion

It is a special form of corrosion which occurs

under thin coatings and/or paintings.

Galvanic Corrosion

It occurs when metals which are dissimilar

are brought into electrical contact under
water.

Environmental Corrosion

It occurs naturally on material due its

reaction with environment, especially with
oxygen.

Flow-Assisted Corrosion
It occurs when a protective layer of a metal
eroded by gas or water which then exposes
the underlying metal to chemical or
mechanical corrosion.

Fretting Corrosion
It occurs at the interface of two contacting
surfaces due to small oscillatory motion
between them in which a corrosive material
is present.

High Temperature Corrosion

It occurs when a material is exposed to high

temperature typically above 400°C (750ºF)
or hot gases.

Soil Corrosion
It occurs when a material is exposed to
moisture and oxygen in the surrounding soil
which have high moisture content, high
electrical conductivity, high acidity, and
high dissolved salts.
