Final Exam ELEC 312 (Electric Machines) L01

Q1: (a) A synchronous generator and an induction generator has 4-pole,

50 Hz. Which generator will run at higher speed? [0.5 marks]

(b) What will be the effect of increasing rotor resistance for a wound
rotor type induction motor on (i) Starting torque, (ii) Starting current
and (iii) maximum torque? [1.5 marks]

(c) What is the value or range of slip for the following operating
conditions in a three-phase induction machine: [2 marks]

(i) Start condition, (ii) full load motoring, (iii) generating and (iv) braking

(d) A 6 pole, 50 Hz, 3-phase induction motor running on full load has
shaft torque of 150 Nm at a rotor frequency of 1.5 Hz. Calculate the
shaft power output. If the mechanical torque lost in windage and
friction be 10 Nm, determine (i) Rotor copper loss, (ii) the input power
to the motor and (iii) efficiency. [3 x 2 = 6 marks]

Q2 (a) What are the conditions for synchronization of a synchronous

generator to the infinite bus? [2 marks]

(b) A three-phase 6-pole star-connected synchronous generator

revolves at 1000 rpm. The stator has 90 slots and 8 conductors per slot.
The flux per pole is 50 mWb (sinusoidally distributed). Calculate the
voltage generated by the machine if the winding factor is 0.96. [4
marks]

(c) A 6.6 kV, 12 MVA, star-connected three-phase alternator is

delivering full-load at 0.8 power factor lagging. The synchronous
reactance of the generator is 10 Ω. Compute the full load current and
the excitation voltage. [4 marks]
Determine the terminal voltage of a dc shunt
Q3: (a)
generator which develops an e.m.f. of 240V and has
an armature current of 50 A on load. Assume the
armature resistance is 0.04Ω. [3 marks]

(b) A lap wound armature is used in a 4-pole dc

machine and 70 coils on the armature each
containing 10 turns. The flux per pole in the machine
is 40 mWb and the machine rotates at 500 rpm; (a)
How many current paths are there in the machine,
(b) What is its induced voltage (c) Find the emf per
turn of the coil. [3 marks]
(c) (i)Draw the speed vs load curve of a dc shunt
motor and a dc series motor [1 mark]
(ii) Draw torque vs load curve of a dc separately
excited motor. [1 marks]
(iii) Why the demagnetization in a dc motor is more
dangerous when compared to a dc generator? Note
that the demagnetization occurs due to the armature
reaction in a dc machine. [2 marks]
