Movie review about Food, Inc.

1. What are the main companies controlling the beef supply?

 The main companies controlling the beef supply are Cargill, Tryson,

National Beef, and Swift are the top four companies controlling the beef

supply. They control more than 80% of the market.

2. How are chickens raised differently now that they used to be?

 The chickens are slaughtered more twice as fast because they are being

killed in 70 days or more but now it only takes 40-48 days to grow a large

chicken and then they kill them. They do it because of the increasing

demand of the people in the chicken.

 Their nutrition is changed to promote rapid and faster growth, resulting in

more chicken to sell and also, they can make more profit. They give the

chicken antibiotics which can also cause the chicken to die before the

harvest and also the chicken can’t balance their self because of how

larger they become.

 The farmers or the company change the chickens to have large breasts

unlike the normal chicken because the people high demand in eating

white meat.
3. Describe the conditions inside the chicken coop shown.

 The space in the coop is really small, and all of the chickens are packed inside.

They are unable to move around freely or even get on to their feet. They stand in

their own wastes, which causes diseases and also even death. As I have

watched the interview in the coop a lot of chickens die because of the diseases

they can get and the antibiotic can’t cure them.

 Also, the coop is was dark unlike other poultry that have many lights, which is not

a habitat for a chicken. The chickens are mass-produced while being mistreated

and disrespectfully, while the company are getting high profit from it.

4. Why are antibiotics administered to the chickens?

The antibiotics are administered to the chicken so they don’t catch any

illness or diseases. It prevents the chicken from dying and make sure it will stay

alive before they are harvest and slaughtered.

5. What problem evolved as a result of feeding corn to cattle?

Farmers raised cattle on corn because it was cheap, expecting that the

cows would gain more weight, producing more in products or supplies for them to

trade. But, as a result of this, the cows began to develop a disease known as E.

Coli, which then causes social problems.

6. Why are the less healthy food choices typically cheaper?

The less healthy food choices are typically cheaper because the mass

production and ingredients used is cheap. The corn is primary ingredients of the

food like junk foods which is chips snacks and drinks and others is cheap (the

cheapest food to farm). Also, it has no nutrients and it can result with different

health complications.

7. Why does Smithfield and other slaughterhouses only hire the poor,

minorities, and immigrants?

Smithfield and other slaughterhouses were abusing the treatment of the

animals and also, they don’t consider the community. They are abiding some of

the rules in doing their business in mass production. So, they hire the poor,

minorities and immigrants because these people have no choice but to work to

have an income. They choose them because they are not capable and cannot

ask questions by their unjust behavior and doings in the productions. They know

that these people will do things without questions and do nothing without it

because they are fearful to lose their job. They are also hired since they are a

low-cost labor.
