Nelson Mandela Rules

For me the “Nelson Mandela Rules” are rules cover all aspects of prison management
and outline the agreed minimum standards for the treatment of prisoners whether
pretrial or convicted. The Rules give guidance on all aspects of prison management,
from admission and classification to the prohibition of torture and limits on solitary
confinement. There is guidance on healthcare, recruitment and training of prison staff,
as well as disciplinary sanctions. The ‘Nelson Mandela Rules’ is to honour the legacy
of the late President of South Africa, ‘who spent 27 years in prison in the course of his
struggle for global human rights, equality, democracy and the promotion of a culture
of peace’.

The “Nelson Mandela Rules” gives the persons deprive by liberty an opportunity to
be treated as equal like the community outside the prison. They are equally treated
means to have proper health care and human rights and other aspects and it is also
promote humane conditions of imprisonment; to raise awareness about prisoners
being a continuous part of society; to value the work of prison staff as a social service
of particular importance.

In conclusion it gives persons who are deprive by liberty to feel safe and assurance
that they will be taken care off properly even though they are in jail/prison. Let’s hope
that this Nelson Mandela Rules will be followed to all countries.
