A three-phase three-wire shunt compensator consisting of lossless passive elements (L and/or C) is
employed at a 415 V, 50 Hz distribution system to provide load balancing and power factorcorrection of a
single-phase 25kW unity power factor load connected between two lines as shown in Figure E3.4.
Calculate (a) supply line currents, (b) compensator currents, (c) the values of compensator elements (in
farads or henries), and (d) its kVA rating.
Solution: Given supply line voltage V,=415 V, frequency of the supply (f)=50Hz, and a single-phase
25 kW unity power factor load connected between two lines that is to be compensated as a balanced load
on the three-phase distribution system.Vs

After compensation, this load is realized as a balanced three-phase unity power factor load; therefore,
the supply line currents are [,,=25 000//3X 415) = 34.78 A, [iy =34.78 A, and [.=34.78 A.
For such a load compensation, the real admittance G,_.) 5 000/415? 145 158 949 mhos has to be
complemented with a reactive admittance network across other two lines to obtain a resultant balanced
load on the AC supply. This problem had been investigated originally by Steinmetz at the beginning of
the twentieth century. It can easily be shown that the load on the AC supply becomes balanced (and
remains real) if a capacitive susceptance Beye = Gap//3 is connected between phases b and c, and an
inductive susceptance Bcea = ~Gray/y/3 is connected between phases c and a. Therefore, compensator
currents are Icy = Icea = Vi. Giapl/3 = 415 x 0.083 807 558 = 34.78 A.
Therefore, Boye = Giaiy/3 = 0.083 807 558 mhos, Cope = Ber/o = 266.90 pF, and Becs=—Grarh/3 =
0.083 807 558 mhos, Leca= 1/Bce.= 38.00 mH.
