Why should teachers have students use
models? (Chapter 6 AST)
Models motivate students to ask questions/pose new
hypotheses. They also make student thinking visible
to teacher. Models can help students make sense of
their thinking. According to Ambitious Science
Teaching, the process of revising models helps
students see the “value of changing their thinking in
response to new ideas or evidence.”

Revising Models
After a few lessons students should revise
their models. One method for revising
models that shows changes in thinking is
using color-coded sticky notes.
