Biodiversity is the total number of species of plants, animals and micro-organisms living
on earth. It is the variety of organisms present on earth. The term biodiversity was coined
by socio-biologist named Edward Wilson. The world bio-diversity day was observed on
22nd may of every year which addresses the promotion of bio-diversity issues.
Bio-diversity plays a major role by balancing ecosystem without which species are prone
to endanger and extinction.

Conservation of biodiversity is global necessity. It is the collective responsibility of all

nations to protect the diverse forms on the planet. Conservationists observe and identified
certain regions by name Biodiversity hotspots for maximum protection as they are
characterized by high levels of specie richness and high levels of endemism.

Bio-diversity hotspot: The concept of bio-diversity hotspots originated by Norman

Myers. It is a type of bio-geographic region with a significant reservoir of biodiversity
that is under threat of extinction from humans. There are about 34 biodiversity hotspots
in the world today which are threatened by destruction, habitat loss and fragmentation.
They are the earth’s biologically richest´ and most threatened terrestrial Eco regions.
