Does Istanbul have a sustainable future
Summarise the strategy They have launched projects which have been
successful to a degree and projects tend to
prioritise one aspect of sustainability and some
progress is being made. Istanbul has created
more new infrastructure projects; they have the
World Heritage listing for the city’s Historical
Peninsula and tourism is being managed
differently.
Social impacts? The way tourism is managed will be significant
for Istanbul as it is income will be able to
support communities without damaging their
culture and heritage of their city. The new
infrastructure made could attract more tourists
and their historical sites are being preserved,
residents are also encouraged to engage with
these sites.
Economic impacts? The infrastructure projects have improved
connectivity and the construction projects
provide employment. On top of this, Istanbul is
opening a new airport. They are putting a place
a Bus Rapid Transit which will allow more
places to be connected which will allow
employees to go work and getting better jobs at
better locations. Bus passengers tend to walk to
catch their buses, brining extra business to shops
and cafes around the transport hubs.
Environmental impacts? The new infrastructure projects have led to tree
cover being reduced and there are few public
parks. There is an imbalance between where
people work and live which could have a major
impact on traffic congestion and reduce the
demand on the bridges and ferries across the
Bosphorus. Building more pedestrian paths
means less of a need to drive cars so less traffic.
The development of Metrobus: a Bus Rapid
Transit (BRT) network with dedicated bus lanes
to bypass traffic jams. The use of buses means
that less cars will be on the road so less
pollution will be produced.
Is the strategy effective? Has it helped reduce
the challenge? How do you know this?
Extra examples/data that is important to help
explain how the challenge has an impact on
Istanbul/Turkey.
