I. DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS

1. A certain solder has a melting point of 224 K. What is its melting point in degrees Fahrenheit?

2. What is the volume of a 2.5 g block of metal if its density is 4.75 g/cm3?

3. A piece of metal with a mass of 114 g was placed into a graduated cylinder that contained 25.00
mL of water, raising the water level to 42.50 mL. What is the density of the metal?

4. The cup is a measure of volume widely used in cookbooks. One cup is equivalent to 225 mL.
What is the density of clover honey (in grams per milliliter) if three quarters of a cup has a mass
of 252 g?

5. Given the following densities at 25oC: magnesium: 1.7 g/cm3, graphite: 1.8 g/cm3, iron: 5.6 g/cm3.
A block of iron has a mass of 826 g. What is the mass of a block of magnesium that has the same
volume as the block of iron?

6. The Hope diamond weighs 44.0 carats. Determine the volume occupied by the diamond,
given that its density is 3.5 g/cm3 at 20oC, and that 1 carat = 256 mg

7. 157.2 × 106 troy oz of silver were used in the United States in 1980. How many gigagrams is
this? (1 troy oz = 31.1 g)

8. A piece of metal with a mass of 125 g is placed into a graduated cylinder that contains 25.00
mL of water, raising the water level to 56.00 mL. What is the density of the metal?

9. An aluminum beverage can contain 12.0 fluid ounces of liquid. Express this volume in
microliters. (1 fl oz = 29.6 mL)

10. A metal slug weighing 25.17 g is added to a flask with a volume of 59.7 mL. It is found that
43.7 g of methanol (ρ=0.791 g/mL) must be added to the metal to fill the flask. What is the density
of the metal?

II. STOICHIOMETRY

1. Balance the following reactions

a. 𝐶𝐶(𝑠𝑠) + 𝑂𝑂2(𝑔𝑔) → 𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶(𝑔𝑔)

b. 𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁2𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆3(𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎) + 𝐻𝐻3𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃4 → 𝐻𝐻2𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆3(𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎) + 𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁3𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃4(𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎)

c. Al(s) + 𝑂𝑂2(𝑔𝑔) → Al2O3(aq)

2. Calculate the mass of FeS formed when 9.42 g of Fe reacts with 8.50 g of S.
Fe(s) + S(s) → FeS(s)

3. The food we eat is degraded, or broken down, in our bodies to provide energy for growth and
function. A general overall equation for this very complex process represents the degradation of glucose
(C6H12O6) to carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O):

C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O

If 856g of C6H12O6 is consumed by a person over a certain period, what is the mass of CO2 produced?

4. Silicon to be used in computer chips is manufactured in a process represented by the following

reaction:

𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆4(𝑠𝑠) + 2𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀(𝑠𝑠) → 𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆(𝑠𝑠) + 2𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀2(𝑠𝑠)

A sample of 225 g of silicon tetrachloride, 𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆4, is reacted with an excess of Mg. How many moles of
Si are produced?

5. Using the following equation:

Pb(SO4)2 + 4 LiNO3 → Pb(NO3)4 + 2 Li2SO4

How many grams of lithium nitrate will be needed to make 250 grams of lithium sulfate, assuming that
you have an adequate amount of lead (IV) sulfate to do the reaction?
