Transmission Control Module (TCM) Adaptive Learning

Check

1. The adaptive learning procedures and self-tests should be done with the VCM and Ford approved
diagnostic tool.
General Equipment: Ford approved diagnostic tool

2.
1. NOTE: The VCM LED prove-out confirms power and ground from the DLC to the VCM.

If the Ford approved diagnostic tool does not communicate with the VCM:
l check the VCMconnection to the vehicle
l check the Ford approved diagnostic tool connection to the VCM
l to diagnose no power to the Ford approved diagnostic tool,
Refer to: Communications Network (418-00 Module Communications Network, Diagnosis and
Testing).

3.
1. If the Ford approved diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
l verify the ignition is in the RUN position
l verify Ford approved diagnostic tool operation with a known good vehicle
l to diagnose no power to the Ford approved diagnostic tool,
Refer to: Communications Network (418-00 Module Communications Network, Diagnosis and
Testing).

4.
1. Carry out the network test.
l If the Ford approved diagnostic tool responds with no communication from one or more
modules,
Refer to: Communications Network (418-00 Module Communications Network, Diagnosis and
Testing).
l If the network test passes, continue with the transmission adaptive learning procedures.

5. Verify that the calibration file is present on the scan tool. If the file is present, reconnect the scan tool
to the vehicle. If the file is not present, download the file from Ford service website.
