Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences - Simply Psychology

1. What do you think Gardner meant by this quote? (5 points)

“the linguistic and logical-mathematical modalities are most typed valued in school and society”

I believe this quote means that in schools today the linguistic and logical-mathematical
learning styles are used the most out of the multiple intelligences. In society, people believe that
these two intelligences are more valued than the other, but that is not the case. Each student
has different intelligences and learning styles that work best for them and that learning style may
not necessarily be linguistic and logical-mathematical. These being the two most taught is unfair
to the students who don't learn best with this style.

2. Why do you think that Gardner used William Shakespeare and Oprah Winfrey as
examples for people with linguistic intelligence? (5 points)

I think Gardner used these two people as examples because they are highly looked
upon and big role models in today's society. They are very experienced when it comes to the
linguistic learning style. William Shakespeare is a poet who is knowledgeable in words and
linguistic intelligence. Oprah Winfrey is a talk show host which means she is experienced in
talking and using her intelligence in linguistics. Readers could then connect real people to the
intelligence and create a better understanding of the linguistic learning style.

3. List the 8 intelligences, then list two possible job fields that Gardner suggests might fit
in each area. In 2-3 quality sentences, write about how your top 3 intelligences ( from

When taking my multiple intelligence survey I learned my top intelligence
and also the intelligence I don't work as well in. This will help me in the future
because I will know which areas I learn and teach best in, but also will be able to
better my skills and grow in the areas I don't learn as well in. That way I can
teach my students in the areas they learn best and provide them with the best
education they can get.

4. In your own words, write down what Gardner states is the difference between
Learning Styles and Multiple Intelligences. What implications might this have for you as
a future teacher? (10 points)

Multiple Intelligence focuses on different intellectual abilities whereas learning

styles focus on the way people go about learning or the specific tasks at hand. As a
teacher, I think it's important to learn students' multiple intelligences first and understand
what they are able to do and how they learn best. After understanding this, focus on
students' learning styles. This will focus on their specific needs and specific things they
need or want to get the best education possible.
