Lubricants and Lubrication

The enclosed lubrication chart specifies the consistency of the lubricants to be used and the locations
of points where these lubricants have to be applied.

It is important that first-class lubricants are to be used exclusively and that these have to be carefully
protected from pollution by storing them in closed container.

I. Oil-filled gear casings

The maintenance intervals can be seen from the enclosed schedule for the changes of
lubricant. To maintain it at the specified level, oil has to be refilled as required during the
interim periods.

Since lubrication is generally effected by means of centrifugal force, excessive oil should not
be filled into a casing and it is necessary for the lower teeth of the gear to have 2-3 cm
immersed in oil. The specified oil level is indicated by level plugs or dipsticks.

It is necessary to have oil-tight sealing of gear casings after repairing to avoid inconveniences
caused by oil leaks. All joint faces and motor flanges are to be carefully cleaned and a suitable
sealing compound applied to them prior to assembly.

II. Anti-friction bearings

As a rule, anti friction bearings arranged in oil-tight gear casings are lubricated by
centrifugation of oil contained therein. In the case where anti-friction bearings are require
manual lubrication through nipples until the used grease and later the new grease escapes at
the bearing. If, the new grease escapes from the nipple, this indicates that either the greasing
channel or the nipple is blocked.

Grease nipples should never be painted.

The lubricant to be used should be of a high-quality brand suitable for anti-friction bearings.
Excessive quantities of grease in a bearing are harmful and liable to cause an abnormal
temperature rise due to increased resistance. Relubrication is only effective if the old grease
can be pressed out. If this is not possible, e.g. due to sealing rings, the bearing has to be
dismantled, cleaned and filled with new grease.

The maintenance intervals can be seen from the schedule below for the change of lubricants.
