ESP: A Holistic Review

(Reaction Paper)

Since its origin in the 1960s, English for Specific Purposes (ESP), a subfield of ELT (English

Language Teaching), has focused on the unique English language requirements of its target

learners. This phrase describes the teaching of a certain English genre to students who have

predetermined objectives. It has grown in popularity over time.

Course designing and providing relevant materials is one of the most important aspects of ESP

teaching. The needs of ESP learners are specific and ready-made teaching materials do not suit

their learning objectives. The focus of course design is on putting together the optimal learning

experiences for students, in an environment that is supportive and appreciative of learning and

intellectual development .

I think the most effective model in needs analysis is the figure 2. This model is regarded as an

effective model for ESP needs analysis. However, the model has limitations. The model does

not focus on learning requirements. It only focuses on target and current needs It does not

emphasize other aspects of needs analysis (such as lacks, wants and so forth).
