Successful bond trader Jimmy Wales relocated to San Diego, California, in 1996 to found Bomis, Inc.

, a Web
portal business. With Larry Sanger serving as editor in chief, Wales established Nupedia, a free online
encyclopaedia, in March 2000. Like other encyclopaedias, Nupedia was structured with an advisory board of
subject-matter experts and a protracted review process. Less than twenty entries had been completed by January
2001, and Sanger suggested expanding Nupedia with an open-source encyclopaedia based on wiki software.
Wikipedia was initially introduced as a feature of Nupedia.com on January 15, 2001, but after the advisory
board objected, it was reintroduced as a separate Web site a few days later. Wikipedia added almost 20,000
articles in 18 languages, including French, German, and Spanish, in its first year.
