Luis Miguel Gallego Basteri (was born San Juan, April 19, 1970),
artistically known as Luis Miguel and nicknamed "El Sol de México", is
a Mexican singer and music producer born in Puerto Rico.He is
considered one of the biggest and most successful artists in Latin
America for his wide range of musical styles, including funk, pop,
ballads, boleros, tangos, jazz, big band and mariachi. He is also
recognized as the only Latin singer of his generation not to cross over
into the Anglo market during the "Latin Explosion" in the 1990s.
Despite singing only in Spanish, he continued to be the best-selling
Latin artist during that decade, and he was credited with popularizing
the bolero genre in the general market.
He has sold more than 100 million records worldwide.
He began his musical career in Mexico in 1980 singing at the wedding
of the daughter of the Mexican national president José López Portillo.
He has won more than 120 awards in a personal capacity, for his songs
and albums, and is the youngest singer to receive a Grammy, at 14
years of age, and also the youngest Latin artist to receive a star on the
Hollywood Walk at 26. years . In 1991, the RIAA recognized the high
sales of his 1991 album Romance, being the third best-selling music
album in Mexico, and one of the best-selling albums in Spanish of all
time In October 2011 he is proclaimed as the best artist Latino of the
last 25 years according to Billboard Magazine.
