PCA-Symbolic Frame Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:
1. Describe the symbolic frame
2. Apply the symbolic frame to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

Planned Parenthood (PP) exists to help people live full, healthy lives, no matter their
income, insurance, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, or immigration status. My
situation and intention is to educate as many people as possible on the services PP has
available and who they are available to. PP provides high-quality inclusive, and
comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care services that all people need and
deserve, with respect and compassion. The organization advocates for public policies that
not only protect but expand reproductive rights. These policies include access to a full
range of health care services, including abortion, and medically accurate education that
advances the understanding of human sexuality, healthy relationships, and body
autonomy. PP participates in research and technological advances that enhance

2) Describe how the symbols of the organization influenced the situation.

Without ignoring a service such as abortions and abortion care, there are several other
ways to utilize organizational symbols to influence the situation. A few ideas include growing
telehealth, activating mobile clinics, and expanding into underserved markets. The fact is, PP is
not as available as everyone thinks it is.There are several states that do not have any idea that an
organization such as this one exists.

Care where you are is the trend of the future, especially post COVID-19. Sexual
healthcare in general is a sensitive subject to many people and often people would rather
go without treatment due to embarrassment instead of going into a clinic. Telehealth is a
terrific way to provide health advise and some types of treatments without the potential
embarrassment of going into a clinic. Mobile clinics take healthcare to everyone they can
physically travel to, the recreational vehicle used contains a lab and exam rooms.
Expanding to the underserved markets allows more people to be treated including
marginalized populations. How does this apply to organizational politics, if political
moves are made to defund PP, they defund all sexual and reproductive health care
services not only abortion services.

3) Recommend how you would use organizational symbols for an alternative course of
action regarding your case.

Expanding to the underserved markets allows more people to be treated including

marginalized populations. How does this apply to organizational politics, if political
moves are made to defund PP, they defund all sexual and reproductive health care
services not only abortion services.

PP is frequently referred to as an abortion clinic, but in reality only four percent of their
services are for abortions. Now the political part, because PP is a non-profit that operates
on donations and grants, certain political supporters feel they should not fund an
organization that provides abortion services. Sadly, a blind eye is turned on all of the
other services that they provide and who they provide them to.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about this frame.

This frame was, honestly, more difficult than I thought it would be. I stand firm that I chose an
appropriate organization to share but finding new topics to write about or drill in on, was
challenging. There is much to learn about non-profit organizations all together
and when it comes to PP, I am looking forward to future research. With the recent over
turn of Roe v. Wade and now the decision to recant, information on this organization and
everything they do to help people has caught my attention.
The dedication of the medical professionals who take their time to see their patients for
who they are as individuals and support the life they envision for themselves.
Reproductive health has become a mainstream issue nationally and internationally. A
robust population of advocates is unwavering in their support to the right to choose. The
future of PP services remains undetermined, however, the organization remains
committed to its patients and the idea of a world without barrier to sexual and
reproductive healthcare.
