QUESTION

The quality of Pinot Noir wine is thought to be related to the properties of

clarity, aroma, body, flavor, and oakiness. Data for 38 wines are given -
1. Fit a multiple linear regression model relating wine quality to these re-
gressors.
2. Construct the analysis-of-variance (ANOVA) table and test for significance
of regression.
3. Use t tests to assess the contribution of each regressor to the model. Dis-
cuss your findings .
4. Calculate R2 and RAdj 2
for this model. Compare these values to the R2
2
and RAdj for the linear regression model relating wine quality to aroma
and flavor. Discuss your results.

5. Find a 95% CI for the regression coefficient for flavor for both models in
the above part . Discuss any differences.
6. Construct a normal probability plot of the residuals. Does there seem to
be any problem with the normality assumption?

7. Construct and interpret a plot of the residuals versus the predicted re-
sponse.
8. Construct the partial regression plots for this model. Does it seem that
variables currently in the model are not necessary?

1
9. Compute the studentized residuals and the R - student residuals for this
model. What information is conveyed by these scaled residuals?
10. Identify the most appropriate transformation for these data. Fit this
model and repeat the residual analysis.

11. Use the all - possible - regressions method to find the “ best ” set of
regressors.
12. Use stepwise regression to select a subset regression model. Does this
model agree with the one found in the above part?

13. Analyze the wine quality data for multicollinearity. Use the variance in-
flation factors and the condition number of X ′ X .
14. Is multicollinearity a potential concern in this model ?
