Dipstick 2277 Floor Profiler Capabilities

The Floor Dipstick® was invented and developed specifically for measuring the flatness and
levelness of floors. However, because of its inherent ability to measure elevation differences
very precisely, the Dipstick® has been found to have other uses that can be very valuable. Here is
a short list of some of the possible uses of the Dipstick®:
1. Measuring the flatness and levelness of floors using the ASTM E-1155 F-Number system.
(Ff and Fl) As determined by many independent third-party tests, the Dipstick® is the fastest
and by far the most accurate way to measure floor flatness and levelness. The Dipstick is
specified by name by many companies that insist on high quality floors.

2. Measuring Defined Traffic High-Bay Narrow Aisle floors under the Fmin system. The Fmin
system was the first of the F-Number systems to be developed by the Face Company, and is
only applicable to floors where the material handling equipment is constrained by wire
guidance or rails to always follow exactly the same path every time. In the past, these floors
needed to be measured by using a Floor Profilograph vehicle simulator developed by the
Face Company. We now have software for the Dipstick that allows you to measure these
floors yourself and obtain accurate Fmin Numbers. The procedure for measuring the floor is
different from E-1155, but it is all covered in the operator’s manual. The software
automatically converts the data you collect into a vehicle simulator and calculates the Fmin
Numbers for you. The Fmin Numbers obtained this way are even more accurate than those
obtained by profilograph.

3. The Dipstick's® built-in software will provide a report in text form and a graph of the
profile(s), either of which can be displayed on the Dipstick® computer's screen or printed.
Tables of elevations and elevation differences can be viewed on the Dipstick® computer's
screen, printed, or an ASCII text file can be created from the data which can be read into any
spreadsheet, word processor, or other ancillary program.

4. Concrete floor contractors will find that the graphs produced by the Dipstick® right at the job
site, along with the F-Numbers, are extremely useful in helping the contractor learn how to
make flatter and more level floors. By comparing the graphs of all the lines run in one
direction to the graphs of lines run the other direction, (and by looking at the F-Numbers in
both directions) the contractor can see what he is doing to the floor - he will be able to see
the small flaws that separate average floors from great floors. By reviewing this data with
his placing and finishing team, he will be able to improve the next floors he makes.

5. Contractors may also want to use the optional "Form Measuring Feet". These are special
feet that can be mounted on the Dipstick which allow the dipstick to be used to measure
concrete forms before the concrete is placed. If the concrete is struck off using the forms as
a guide, the surface of the concrete will be no flatter nor more level than the top edge of the
forms. If the forms have waves in them, the concrete floor will have those same waves. The
Dipstick's built-in software presents both a graphical and numerical output showing the
flatness and levelness of the form, and it does this instantly. It will show you exactly how
much the forms need to be adjusted, at every location, right at the job site.

6. The Dipstick® can make precise elevation surveys within a limited area for specialized
reasons, such as the mounting of certain types of industrial or laboratory-type equipment.

7. The Dipstick® can make a similar but more detailed elevation survey that produces a 3-D
picture of the surface. This can be very useful in certain applications.

8. The Dipstick® can measure the difference in elevation across construction joints, where the
two slabs are supposed to be at the same plane. In a similar manner, the Dipstick can be
used to measure curling on floor joints of older existing floors. This is done both graphically
and numerically.

9. The Dipstick® can measure the motion of a slab as a piece of heavy equipment passes over a
joint. If the Dipstick® is placed so that each end of the Dipstick® is resting on a different
slab, across a construction joint, and a heavy fork lift is driven across the joint nearby, the
Dipstick® can measure the deflection of the slabs at the joint in real time.

10. The Dipstick® can measure the actual as-built slope of a tilted surface such as a ramp or
drain.

11. The Dipstick® can measure the camber of girders and beams both before and after loading.
The difference between them is the amount of bending the beam has undergone. This can be
printed out as a table showing the amount of deflection at every point.

12. The Dipstick® can measure the thickness of fills and coatings, such as skim coats and
overlays. Since the Dipstick® is capable of calculating and displaying the difference
between any two lines, if one line is run on the subgrade before the skim coat or filler is
applied, and one line is run at the same location afterwards, the difference between the two is
equal to the thickness of the overlay. The high degree of precision and accuracy of the
Dipstick® (to within 0.001") and the fact that the difference or thickness is calculated and
displayed every 1 foot along the measurement line, makes the Dipstick® a useful tool for this
purpose.

13. If your specification is the older "Gap Under the Straightedge", you can produce a graphic
emulation of the "Gap Under the Straightedge" - this shows the profile with a bar lying on
top of the profile. The bar represents the Straightedge. You can change the length of the
Straightedge and the maximum allowable gap under the straightedge. You can even move
the Straightedge along the profile to see the gap under the Straightedge at every point. You
can also print a nicely formatted tabular report that shows the gap at each location, with the
failing locations highlighted.

14. The Dipstick® can measure the straightness or "trueness" of any tools used to strike off or
float wet concrete, such as screeds, highway straightedges, floats, and the like. It has been
shown that the finish flatness and levelness of cured concrete is directly affected by any
bends, "kinks", or dents in these tools.

15. For users who are required to test using the British TR 34 system, the Dipstick can measure
and report either FM (Free Movement) floors or DM (Defined Movement) floors, both to the
3rd Edition requirements of TR 34 and to the different 4th Edition requirements.

16. For users who are required to test using the German standard DIN 18202, the Dipstick can
measure and report to this standard and also to DIN 15185.

17. The Dipstick® can be used to set the elevations of bridge-deck rails or pipe screeds. It has
been shown that the finished bridge deck surface follows the contours of the temporary rail
upon which the bridge deck screeds ride. The smoothness of the finished curved surface
depends substantially on the smoothness of the curve of the rails. The Dipstick® can provide
a table of corrections, either visible on the screen of the Dipstick's ® computer, or printed out,
for the crew to make to bring the rail to the desired curve.

18. The Dipstick can be switched to measure in either Imperial or Metric mode within seconds.
All new model Dipsticks® can measure at 12", or at 300mm or 250 mm spacing without any
mods or attachments; a variable foot spacer bar (standard with the Road model Dipstick®) is
available that will allow measurement at any spacing between 3" or 75 mm and 12" or
300mm. An additional adapter can be used to measure at 24" or 500mm intervals.

19. Actually, the Dipstick® excels at just about any application where very precise elevation
measurements or elevation differences are desired.

20. In addition to all the above, an optional software and hardware package is available to allow
the Dipstick® to measure roads, highways, and bridges using highway roughness indices.
This package can measure the International Roughness Index or IRI, Half-Car IRI, Rut
Depth, Gap under the Straight Edge, and others.
