The Teaching Profession

1. Agree or disagree on individuals being qualified to do a professional job.

I think that you don’t have to be qualified to do a professional job as in some cases, that
individual maybe be very competent in the job he/she is doing, as in many cases, I personally
know a number of people who are all native English speakers who got a job as teaching English
for approximately 5 years in Thailand without any form of qualifications, but as of now the law
in Thailand has changed if you want to pursue a teaching job, now you have to show the relevant
paper work such as a degree in education or relevant degree in another field Many of them had a
walk in interview and were offered the teaching job as there were native speakers, but obviously
if you are doing manual hard labor ( working with machinery, computers, IT, etc) then you
should have the relevant qualifications to do the job

2. In your opinion what are the characteristics of a good teacher.

A good teacher must have many characteristics to teach such as a very engaging personality and
teaching style as you don’t want the students to get bored with you. A clear understanding about
his/her objectives. Good classroom management, and discipline, which is very important to
manga your students. A good education and knowledge. Being able to communicate with parents
and other teachers, which is very important in case of parent and teachers meetings. A good
teacher will try to get the best results out of his/her students. A very good knowledge of the
curriculum and standards, show lots of passion, patience and tolerance and finally a good
relationship with students.
3. Explain the education profession is vested by the public with a trust and responsibility
requiring the highest ideals of professional service.
In the belief that the quality of the services of the education profession directly influences the
nation and its citizens, the educator shall exert every effort to raise professional standards, to
promote a climate that encourages the exercise of professional judgment, to achieve conditions
that attract persons worthy of the trust to careers in education, and to assist in preventing the
practice of the profession by unqualified persons.

In satisfaction of the obligation to the teaching profession, the educator should obey his
requirements and his/her responsibilities as follows

“1. Shall not in an application for a professional position deliberately make a false statement or
fail to disclose a material fact related to competency and qualifications.

2. Shall not misrepresent his/her professional qualifications.

3. Shall not assist any entry into the profession of a person known to be unqualified in respect to
character, education, or other relevant attribute.
4.    Shall not knowingly make a false statement concerning the qualifications of a candidate for
a professional position.

5. Shall not assist a no educator in the unauthorized practice of teaching.

6. Shall not disclose information about colleagues obtained in the course of professional service
unless disclosure serves a compelling professional purpose or is required by law.

7. Shall not knowingly make false or malicious statements about a colleague.

8. Shall not accept any gratuity, gift, or favor that might impair or appear to influence
professional decisions or action.”

4. Agree or disagree.
“A teacher shall not disclose information about colleagues obtained in the course of
professional service unless disclosure serves a compelling professional purpose or is
required by law.”
I strongly agree that a teacher or any teachers should not give information about another teacher
or colleagues, but only if it affects their outside working hours, but obviously if something
serious was to happen with a said teacher that could affect the school, student(s) or teachers, then
something would have to be done about it, if the school need to find out about a teacher, then
they should ask the teacher to get a police report on the said individual, from the country he/she
is in now and also their home country. There was a case in my school where a teacher was
working, but unknown to the personal/ management section of the school. It was later found out
that the person was wanted for a serious crime in his/her home town. So certain things I can
agree on, but if more serious things that involve the school then I would certainly disclose
information, after all teachers are meant to be professional adults and a pillar of the community.

5. Give/outline your personal advice for a teacher to attain the components of the “ethical

6. What is the difference between professional knowledge and professional practice?

Professional knowledge is the study of how teachers have a clear and deep understanding of their
content areas, curriculum, and students. Professional knowledge is critical to providing students
relevant learning experiences at an appropriate depth of knowledge. Whereas professional
practice is what Teachers have a responsibility to develop and maintain qualified relationships
with a various range of learners, communicate with parents and act ethically, promote positive
values and maintain and raise professional standards.
