II. Answer the following questions in 40-60 words:-

1) Describe Soapy’s first desperate attempt to get himself arrested.

Ans. In order to get arrested, Soapy planned to go into a luxurious cafe on Broadway street. He decided
to fill his belly by eating a big, expensive meal and then not pay the bill. But just by looking at the
condition of his clothes and shoes, he was ejected by the head waiter of the cafe immediately.  

2) How does music cause a sudden and wonderful change in Soapy’s soul?

Ans. The sight of the home where Soapy had spent his childhood suddenly changed his outlook. The old
memories of his mother and the sweet music revived his love for a decent life. He decided to work and
become somebody in life.

II. Answer the following questions in 90-100 words :-

1) Why did the author choose the title ‘The Cop and the Anthem’?

Ans. The author chose the title ‘The Cop and the Anthem’ because it points to the main source of the
irony that makes the story what it is. The cop and the anthem play the major role in Soapy’s life. When
he was looking out for the cop to get himself arrested, he faced failures. He did not succeed in all his
attempts. After hearing the anthem (i.e. church music) he recalled his olden days and made up his mind
to change himself. But irony plays a major role and due to loitering he gets arrested by the cops.
